NM's visit to NG Mutt sparks controversy.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State unit president V. Muraleedharan joined issue with Left parties and social organisations over their protests against the invitation extended to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the Golden Jubilee of the Sreenarayana Dharma Meemamsa Parishad at Sivagiri on Wednesday.

Mr. Muraleedharan told a press conference here on Monday that it was for the ‘sanyasins’ of Sivagiri Math to decide whom they wanted to invite. The politicians were not competent to advise the ‘sanyasins’ on the matter.

There was a dichotomy in their approach. Those who opposed the invitation were people who argued against interference by religion in politics. However, they were trying to intervene in religious matters.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI-M] and other parties, which were portraying Mr. Modi as one hated by the people for his communalism, were doing everything for PDP leader Abdul Nasir Maudany. People would understand their politics, he said.

There were differences of opinion within the Kerala Cabinet over Labour Minister Shibu Baby John calling on Mr. Modi, he said adding that he was not aware of any political talks having taken place between the two. Mr. Baby John was saying that he had erred in meeting Mr. Modi because of political pressure.

Special Correspondent adds from Kozhikode: BJP leader P.S. Sreedharan Pillai said here on Monday that the CPI(M) was eyeing the minority vote bank. “This crooked strategy can damage the State’s social harmony. Not long ago, the CPI(M) leadership had declared it is against worshipping Sree Narayana Guru as a god. And now, CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan is demanding that the Sivagiri Math be declared out of bounds for Hindu devotees,” Mr. Pillai said.

Mr. Modi had every right to visit the Math as he was a devotee of the Guru. The revered leaders of the Mathe had every right to extend an invitation to Mr. Modi. “Communists had the dubious distinction of portraying Kumaran Asan, Sree Narayana Guru, and Vivekanadan as bourgeoisie at one time,” he said.

It was notable that CPI(M) leaders had no qualms about visiting Abdul Nasir Maudany and Sunni leader Kanathapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musaliar. He said Gujarat was home to over 8 lakh Malayalis and it was wrong to treat Mr. Modi as ‘untouchable.’ He said.

If Hindus can't visit the Matth, who else will be allowed to visit them?
If Hindus can't visit their temples and Matths, where will they go for their worship?
This is a clear case of Hinduism being driven out of Hindu minority states in Bharat - a fact that even some of our friends in this Forum have trouble believing that this sort of thing is happening in Bharat.

    Namaste,

It was very nice of NM to accept the invitation and go there. He is probably the only CM in the whole country to openly identify himself with Hindu causes. Hope his destiny takes him to higher offices.

Current controversy was inevitable as Kerala is witnessing for the first time a criticism which has been directed towards a hitherto untouchable target called ‘untouchability in politics’.

Apart from his principles on central concepts of kindliness, compassion and grace or mercy and strong resolve to set aright social wrongs such as untouchablity, Guru was the first visionary in the whole of Travancore state to speak in terms of freedom in spirituality and social equality. And by inviting Mr. Modi, the mendicants at the Sivagriri mutt, founded by the same guru, by courtesy, has shown the fortitude and determination to speak in terms of freedom in politics.

If the long established social wrongs and order Narayana Guru hoped to defeat was set by the religious orthodoxy, his followers at the present moment is confronted with the obstacles and barriers decided upon as by the political warlords who take the religion and the teachings of the seers for granted.

In his keynote address at the golden jubilee celebration of Sri Narayana Dharma Meemamsa Parishath at Varkala, Mr. Modi said, "If Narayana Guru's teachings were imbibed properly; the nation would not have gone through the present crisis. Although untouchability has been wiped out from society to a certain extent, it still persists in politics.''

It seems superfluous in our view to treat a chief minister who has been successfully re-elected three times and still in a literate state like Gujarat as a mere untouchable.

Non Hindus of course would have a free entry.

Commies say, they can go to mosques and churches.

There was a talk of compulsorily open the Hindu temples for non Hindus.
