Vijayadasami or Dussera is celebrated on the tenth day of the month of Aswijam according to the Hindu calendar which corresponds to September or October of the english calendar.In the year 2013 Vijayadasami is on 13th /14th October. The first nine days are celebrated as Maha Navratri, ('nine nights') or Sharada Navratri and culminates on the tenth day as Dasara.It is celebrated in different parts of India and by Hindus all over the world.
Vijayadasami is supposed to be very auspicious day to start education (Aksharabhyas) for children,to start learning of fine arts like music(Sangeetam)and dance(Natyam).
The name Dussehra is derived from Sanskrit Dasha-hara literally means removal of ten referring to Lord Rama's victory over the ten-headed demon king Ravana.The day also marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the demons Mahishasur. The name Vijayadashami is also derived from the Sanskrit words "Vijaya-dashmi" literally meaning the victory on the dashmi (Dashmi being the tenth lunar day of the Hindu calendar month).
On this day in the Treta Yuga, Shri Ram, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, killed the great demon Ravana who had abducted Rama's wife Sita to his kingdom of Lanka. Rama, his brother Lakshmana, their follower Hanuman and an army of vanaras fought a great battle to rescue Sita. The entire narrative is recorded in the epic Ramayana, a Hindu scripture.Many people perform "Aditya Homa" as a "Shanti Yagna" and recite Sundara Kanda of Srimad Ramayana for 5 days. These Yagna performances are thought to create good atmosphere surrounding the house that will keep the household environment clean and healthy.
In the age of dwapara yuga, Pandavas lost to Kauravas in a game of dice, and spent twelve years of Vanawas, or exile to the forest, followed by one year of Agnyatawas(living in exile or living so that your real identity is concealed). The brothers hid their weapons in a hole in a Shami tree before entering the Kingdom of Virat to complete the final year of Agnyatawas. After that year, on Vijayadashmi, they recovered the weapons, declared their true identities and defeated Kauravas, who had attacked King Virat to steal his cattle. Since that day, Shami trees and weapons have been worshipped and the exchange of Shami leaves on Vijayadashmi has been a symbol of good will and victory. This is also called Shami/Jammi Puja.
On this day in India ,in many workshops,factories and offices they do ayudha puja for machines to work properly without any accident or injury or breakdown.
Vijaydasami celebrates the victory of Lord Shri Ram and Goddess Durga. In both the forms it symbolizes victory of good over evil. It is celebrated with enthusiasm and devotion to God Rama and Devi Durga. It spreads the message to the world that evil and bad things cannot survive for long and it is bound to end one day. Manipulation and false conduct does not stand anywhere in front of truth and while celebrating this festival everyone can feel the victory of truth and end of the evil in the environment.
