    Kshama

    Hari Om

    Namaste to all,

During this week’s joining of satsang, delighted that discussion was of a small portion of the BrahadAranyaka Upanishad. Through discussion, devotee mentioned term had never heard before. Even though not Hindu term, one of greatest virtues in subjective, had previously been familiar with that was even close to this new term, was Shibumi. This concept was very dear to me. The term mentioned in satsang and expounded upon was Kshama. As he shared his thoughts on this concept/virtue, was beyond captivated. Do not wish to prejudice responses to a following question, but Kshama seemed at that moment and during time since, as Sanatana Dharma, as pure poetry, beauty, as the ineffable truth herself. The speaker, as he shared his thoughts on Kshama, put to peace a number of things that struggle with. So many adjectives and superlatives could attach to this concept.

Additionally, thought in time since, of Icy’s thread of "Hindusim Aggregation", http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?t=12151

Pose to Icy and dear members, if this is something that would fit as an additional item?

Request is that members who have been familiar with this concept as captured in the glorious word, Kshama, explain their thoughts and explanations towards this.

For anyone who may be inclined to share, thank you, as I will get much out of this, and perhaps others will as well.

    Thank you.

    Namaste FFTW,

What an amazing concept. That is something I have never heard of before today. I looked it up and found this great description: http://veda.wikidot.com/kshama. I don't have a lot to add since this is new to me, I just wanted to share that resource with anyone else who may be unfamiliar with the concept.

    Thank you.

Vannakkam: Kshama is also often listed as one of the yamas, in the yamas and niyamas. There is a yama/niyama thread on here somewhere.

kṣamā or kṣamāṃ - is patience , forbearance . It is considered one of the sāmānya-dharmā-s i.e. an obligation to all.

So, where does this fit within yama and ni+yama ? Yama-s (restraints ) and niyama as observances , as the word means checking & controlling . Let's take a look ( it is there; I am in hopes the reader can make the connection).

    yama-s
    • ahiṁsā - non-harm and leads us to the other 4 yama-s:
    • satya - is true , real , actual , genuine , sincere , honest , truthful , faithful , pure , virtuous , Reality.
We know there are two levels or experiences of this. One is the spoken word, the truthful word, some call this honesty.
    • asteya or non-stealing
    • brahmacarya - the conventional view: state of an unmarried religious student; a state of continence and chastity yet we talked of its components brahma+carya; Brahma as the creator, the creative impulse of all + carya is conduct. So , both put together, it is the conduct of Brahma, the source, Brahman. The path that leads to Brahman.
    • aparigraha - is to back-away from and release (from the behavior of, since it is a yama) of grasping, binding and seizing. Therefore apaigraha is a most descriptive term for the absence of hoarding

    niyama-s

    • śauca - cleanliness. Yet in essence, purity. We can consider the purity of the heart and mind ( thinking and emotions)
    • santoṣa - contentment. The absence of greed and possessing in excess ( hoarding)
    • tapas - is from tapa , to consume by heat or fire; this tapas blooms as tapasya. Most think austerity; some think religious austerity, penance, even severe restrictions. From a practical perspective , tapasya is self-control. This tapas compliments the yama of aparigraha.
    • svadhayāya - is considered study. It is also self-knowing. The study that can assist the individual to become SELF-knowing.
    • īśvara-praṇidhāna - this is the notion of recognizing and advancing ( some say adoring) Īśvara. Creating that personal relationship with sarvesvara (Lord of All).

    Dear Friend,

Various possibilities and probabilities of mind decide the whole meaning of our life. If we do not have a unifying factor that reconciles this distinctness between them, we will be caught in one or another of the small loopholes of sensation, reason or will. Therefore, an aspirant heading for the path of the Absolute needs to generate a quality of tolerance within. This quality of tolerance is called kṣamā or Kṣānti.

This psychological attitude of acceptance of values representing both favourable and unfavourable has to be done with an ‘inner smile’, or else it would act as if a feeling of intense unhappiness resulting from affliction. Reducing and suppressing natural occurrence of emotions into a single point can cause a sense of depression; and the feelings kept in check with difficulty can anytime come open suddenly and violently.

Showing a fighting disposition cannot be justified in situations pertaining to spiritual education.Love

    Namaste!

Kṣamā is essential to the practice of karma-phala-vairāgya (renunciation of the fruits of action), the heart of Karma-yoga as taught in the Bhagavad Gītā. We need to be able to bear it when things do not go our way in order to be able to "let go" of the results of our many efforts. It's also important to note that this is not simply a passive attitude toward life, as if nothing matters. Rather, it is the wisdom to realize that we cannot control everything. There is only one Controller, whose purposes are not always evident to us. We should make the best effort we can, but put the ego aside when things do not go as we envision. Kṣamā helps us to cultivate this state.

At least that is how I see it. There are many other dimensions of this marvelous virtue, as others have already said. It also helps to smooth our human relations, when we are willing to let go of our pride in order to accept patiently when others do not seem to understand or appreciate us. Again, this does not mean that we do not keep trying, but that we do not become so vain as to think that the universe must order itself to align with our whims.
"One who makes a habit of prayer and meditation will easily overcome all difficulties and remain calm and unruffled in the midst of the trials of life." (Holy Mother Sarada Devi)
