    Humour in the Tirukural

Vannakkam: I didn't really know where to post this, but since the Kural is on ethics, and that's dharma, here it is.

I'm not sure if it was Tiruvalluvar himself, or the translator embellishing, but I often find sweet touches if humour in a couplet.

Take this one for example from Chapter 82 on 'Harmful Friendship'

"Though unscrupulous men may seem to consume you in friendship, their companionship grows more delightful as it declines."

or this one on 'Ignorance' Chapter 85

"The suffering that ignorant men inflict upon themselves can hardly be contrived by their enemies."

I'll try to post more in the upcoming days.

Vannakkam: There are several translations but this is the one I am using. I don't know if the original Tamil version is free on-line or not. It might be. http://ebooks.gutenberg.us/Himalayan...aver/enter.htm It is a free download on line. Not sure if any other ones are.

    I did find this... https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...aft.thirukural

Has a taoist touch to it... Humour is definitely needed in every aspect of life. Shame religion usually miss out on this point.

Vannakkam: Good to read your words, Pietro.

    On Hospitality

The poverty of poverties is having plenty yet shunning guests.
Such senselessness is only found in senseless fools.

    On Speaking Pleasant Words

To utter harsh words when sweet ones would serve
Is like eating unripe fruits when ripe ones are at hand.

Vannakkam: Chapter 41 - The Neglect of Learning

"Like unproductive barren land is the man who has neglected
learning. All that can be said about him is the he exists."

    Chapter 38 - Destiny

"What is there that is mightier than destiny?
For it is present even in the plans we devise to overcome it."

Vannakkam; From Chap 19 on Avoidance of Backbiting

    - Virtue declares that dying, not living, will bring
    better rewards to deceiving backbiters.

Chap 20 on Avoidance of Pointless Speech

    - A long and pointless discourse itself declares
to all the speaker's lack of worth.

    Namaste,

I don't have anything to add yet, but this does make me want to study the Tirukural more. Sometimes the "Daily Inspiration" quote in the Hinduism Today daily emails will be from the Tirukural, and I always find them quite insightful.

I think this is a great topic for a thread, as humor is just one aspect of the happiness and joy of Sanatana Dharma. I think that's why Hindus are generally seen as very happy and content people. We find bliss everywhere, we recognize the Divine in all, and there is no greater joy than that. We are easygoing, yet steadfast; happy, yet content. Such is the beauty of Hinduism. Uptightness, guilt, etc. are not part of Dharma.

Sri Aurobindo said, "To listen to some devout people, one would imagine that God never laughs."

    Jai Sri Ram
    Sanatana Dharma ki Jai!
    Jai Hanuman

Vannakkam: Some of it can be quite dry. You may have to read some before finding what you find funny. That too, is personal. I have a dry sense of it, so I may find things funny that others do not. Mostly I find his creative similes the best.

But it's quite amazing how applicable an ethical scripture more than 2000 years old is today.

Besides that, many people these days are more interested in philosophy than ethics.

from Chapter 8 - Possessing Love
    - As the blazing sun dries up a boneless worm,
so does virtue scorch a loveless being.
