DEVI MAHATMYAM SUGGESSTIONS? ( DURGA SAPTASHATI/CHANDI PATHA )

    Namaste,

I finished reading a literal translation of Sri Devi Mahatmyam/Durga Saptashati/Chandi Patha of the Markandeya Purana.

Can members share the names of the translated versions they refer to?Are there any translations with good commentary for the same?

    Namaste Ram116040,

I am assuming you are asking for English translation.

There are several translations with commentary available-
my humble suggestion would be to avail yourself of more than one,
know the authors' background, and see what the differences and similarities
    in emphasis and interpretation are.

If you are willing to spend $40, the "frequently bought together"
    deal here
    http://www.amazon.com/In-Praise-Godd...dp/089254080X#
may be a good place to start.

    There is also this:

and a PDF link available here:

I hope this is some help to you.

    Namaste Ji,

Thanks a lot for the links.
    (I read the
simple and beautiful translation by Swami Jagadiswarananda.)

May I know the one you like?

    Namaste Ram116040,

My apologies for the delay in replying.

The one you mention is indeed beautiful and simple, and if one is not
in need of commentary, has the advantage of being small in size, a
soft-cover that is easy to keep during any type of travel.

"In Praise Of The Goddess" is thoughtful and well-organized, and has
both transliteration as well as Sanskrit; I would have had the transliteration
joined with the Sanskrit instead of separated, to aid better beginners in learning the recitation.

Again, I would encourage one fresh to the Devi Mahatmyam to read more
than one translation/commentary; whether one agrees or disagrees with
how it has been interpreted, learning more about one's self as well as
Devi is unavoidable in undertaking such a process.

I hope this is of help to you.

What do you mean -- "as well as"
Are they seperate or different entities?

    Namaste JaiMaaDurga Ji,

Thanks a lot for suggesting Devadatta Kali's translation of the Devi Mahatmyam.I received the book through courier just now.I read a few pages randomly and I am happy to see that it has a fine commentary.I think it is good to begin with Sri Devadatta Kali's work and once I am done I will study the traditional commentaries of Panditas.Thank you so much.

P.S. I ordered an other work of Devadatta Kali, The Hidden Wisdom of the Goddess/Veiling Brilliance:A Journey to the Goddess, also on the Devi Mahatmyam(but it was not delivered as it is not available with the seller at the moment).Did you read it?

    Namaste Ram11,

I am pleased to have been of help; I have not read the other work you mentioned, but the preview available on Google Books is interesting-
it seems to be an effort to make the Devi Mahatmyam more accessible to Westerners in a more contemporary story form.

May Devi bless your pursuit of greater knowledge
