    Namaste,

A Stem Cell donation and transplant video,

Your chances of some day becoming a donor are one in a million. South Asians living overseas and in their own countries need to get more involved by registering to be potential stem cell donors as they are the best hope of other South Asians with blood disorders.

    Namaste,

    Another match found...

As already stressed, blood disorders (cancerous) happen in greater percentages among South Asians than among other ethnic groups; yet the number of people of South Asian ancestry registering to be possible stem cell donors is very limited. That is very unfortunate as the young and healthy among us could be saving lives if we ever became a match for someone with a blood disorder; the kind that requires a stem cell transplant. So, I once again request South Asians in India as well as those settled in other countries to please register for stem cell donation. Matches are found mostly within one's own ethnic group. So, the person waiting for you to give him/her another chance to live is a South Asian.

Re: Stem Cell/Bone Marrow Donor Registration

    Namaste,

One of the most poignant moments in my life has been to witness a life saver, a stem cell donor; and his beneficiary, the recipient; come face to face for the first time. I was really moved by this experience.

I happened to attend a fundraiser for this cause where the organizers had arranged for the two to meet for the first time. Before that was done, short videos, made by the donor and the recipient were shown. As could be expected, the recipient was extremely grateful for the gift of life, but the donor had a funny story to tell. This exuberant young man stated, 'About a week after I got laid off from work, I got a call to come over for some blood tests to determine if I was a match for a patient. The blood tests confirmed that I indeed was a match and I was requested to be the stem cell donor for a 19 year old male, which I readily agreed to. In the ensuing days, I decided that I should give the best stem cells that I can produce. With that in mind, I started working out quite a bit. I became muscular, shed some extra weight and started feeling healthier than before. Then I went in to donate the stem cells. I sure hope the recipient is not showing off his new found strong stem cells and bullying people ." Everyone in the audience broke into a laughter. This young man not only volunteered to donate his stem cells but made an effort to make them stronger. It takes a truly selfless person to go the extra distance with his gift of life. How we wish that our spiritual evolution results in helping others to reduce the pain in this world!
