    Real name of australia

P N Oaks, in his book World Vedic Culture, points out that the aborigines of Austrailia have their origin in what are popularly known as the Dravidian races of South India.
The word 'Australia' has no meaning in any other language but in Sanskrit. During the times of Ramayana and Mahabharata, Australia was known as 'Astralaya'. (astra + alaya - meaning The home of the Weapons) similar as Himalaya (Him + Alaya - meaning the home of Ice in Sanskrit).

My point of view on this matter ( which is neither here nor there)...

Australia is rooted in the latin word australis meaning southern. And the word auster meaning south wind, suggesting the ‘south country’.
The Dutch explorers called it New Holland. Yet we are told one Matthew Flinders suggested Australia , still holding its original roots to latin. This occurred around 1814 ( so says my reference¹)

    Another view
The term astra means a weapon in general… and we know laya and alaya .

    • Laya is lying down, a place a rest.
    • If we add an ‘a’ in front of it (alaya) we get not + lying down.
      • Note that alaya is defined as permanence , non-dissolution .
    • So this could be a place where weapons are not laid down ( suggesting courage in battle, never resting), a place of permanence, a strong hold.

Yet if we spell this word this way – astrālaya then dis-assemble it we have astra + ālaya ( as two ‘a’s together given one long ā). Hence
ālaya = dwelling. Now we come to the original definition offered: the dwelling place of weapons.
