So many of our modern day Gurus didn't appoint individual successors, and it led to problems. In some cases organisations fell apart altogether.
So its all another example of the wisdom of tradition.
Aum Namasivaya
Namaste EM Ji,
As you said smooth transfer of authority plays a very significant role in the survival of any tradition.
I think there are two issues with modern organizations
1.Too many disciples are given Sanyasa without testing whether they are suitable for such a life.
2.Successor is not announced, which later leads to ugly fighting for power.
In the case of Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peeta,Sri Adi Shankaracharya listed eligibility rules and set very high standards for selecting successors.
So though the Sringeri Acharya takes many disciples and teaches advanced scriptures daily to them, the best among all is given Sanyasa and is simultaneously anointed as successor.
Also,I heard that the Goddess Sharadamba herself decides when and who should become the next Uttaradhikari. It is said that She gives directions to incumbent Acharya sometimes during the elaborate Sri Sharada Chandramoulishwara daily Puja or at times when the Acharya is in Samadhi state.Later the Acharya enters the sanctum of the Goddess alone and bolts the doors from inside and receives instructions from the Devi.
