    Namaste,

In the following link is the announcement speech of Sri Sringeri Shankaracharya Ji with English subtitles.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdjCDSOIIxE

The reason behind sharing this is,today most of the Gurus, Swamis & Babas are fake and dangerous, very few are genuine and learned. The way traditional institutions of Smarta,Vaishnava and Shaiva Sampradayas function needs to be known to all.

In the video the Shankaracharya speaks about Sri Adi Shankaracharya, the history of the Sringeri Sharada Peetam, the lineage, his own Guru and his new Sishya.

Re: Sringeri Sri Shankaracharya Ji Announces Successor

    Namaste,

The Brahmacharin Ji was given the Yogapatta(monastic name) Sri Vidhushekara Bharati Swami by the senior Shankaracharya Sri Bharati Tirtha MahaSwami Ji during the Sishya Sweekaara Mahotsava held at Sringeri Kshetra.

It is the first Sanyasa initiation I saw as the event was live telecast today.

All videos of the event are available in the following link:
    https://www.youtube.com/user/laks316videos/videos

    Short Summary:
The Brahmacharin performed complete fast, remained awake(Jagarana) on the day before.Next day he performed many Homas, and took vows such as complete Ahimsa etc.

The new Sanyasin Ji was given Kashaya Vastra(Saffron clothes),Danda(Stick) and Kamandala(water pot).

Then he crossed the Tunga river by a boat, which is a symbolic crossing of the Samsaric ocean from 'this' bank to the 'other'.

Then, the senior Acharya gave Pranava mantra upadesha and MahaVakya Pradana on which he is supposed to meditate. This was very interesting as the Acharya took him close like a father lovingly puts a son on his lap and taught him.

Certain ceremony known as Paryanka Shaucha was done.

Then Sri Vidushekara Bharati MahaSwami ascended the Vyakyana Simhasana
(seat of Transcendental Wisdom), a Salagrama was placed on his head and worshiped. The accompanying commentary said that a Sanyasi is considered as form of Lord Sriman Narayana.

Then the senior Acharya Ji annouced in Sanskrit,Tamil,Telugu and Kannada the Peetarohana &
Yogapatta of the 37th Peetadhipati(Head) of the Dakshinamnaya Sri Sringeri Sharada Peetam Sri Vidhushekara Bharati MahaSwami.

(This institution was one among the four established in four corners of India by Sri Adi Shankaracharya 1200 years ago to uphold and propagate Sanatana Dharma. The Dakshinamnaya Peetam covers the present states of Karnataka,Tamil Nadu,Kerala,Andhra Pradesh,Telangana and Maharastra. So the Mathadipathis tour these states, assist temples and guide people.Study and preservation of the Yajur Veda is a special duty here.)

Then the two Shankaracharyas had darshan of Sri Sharada Parameshwari, the presiding Devata.

It was followed by Bhiksha Kanuka Samarpana.Priests from many prominent temples brought blessed Prasada and Vasthras. Then representatives of Maharajas of erstwhile kingdoms of Mysore,Travancore(Thiruvananthapuram),Nepal and many others made offerings. The program concluded after other important people and common devotees had darshan and made Bhiksha offerings.

In the evening a procession of the two Acharyas will be taken in Palanquins offered hundreds of years ago by the Vijayanagara Emperors. After which the Acharyas will give a Anugraha Bhashana
    (Dharmic discourse).

Many rituals were conducted and a detailed explanation is available in this link:

Vannakkam: The passing of authority in this way is so important for any sampradaya, parampara. When it's public like this, everyone knows, and all the monks and lay followers are able to switch their devotion to the new Guru without undue confusion.

So many of our modern day Gurus didn't appoint individual successors, and it led to problems. In some cases organisations fell apart altogether.

So its all another example of the wisdom of tradition.

    Namaste EM Ji,

As you said smooth transfer of authority plays a very significant role in the survival of any tradition.

I think there are two issues with modern organizations
1.Too many disciples are given Sanyasa without testing whether they are suitable for such a life.
2.Successor is not announced, which later leads to ugly fighting for power.

    In the case of Dakshinamnaya
Sri Sharada Peeta,Sri Adi Shankaracharya listed eligibility rules and set very high standards for selecting successors.
So though the Sringeri Acharya takes many disciples and teaches advanced scriptures daily to them, the best among all is given Sanyasa and is simultaneously anointed as successor.

Also,I heard that the Goddess Sharadamba herself decides when and who should become the next Uttaradhikari. It is said that She gives directions to incumbent Acharya sometimes during the elaborate Sri Sharada Chandramoulishwara
daily Puja or at times when the Acharya is in Samadhi state.Later the Acharya enters the sanctum of the Goddess alone and bolts the doors from inside and receives instructions from the Devi.

Yes. Thats what acharya said in his announcement. In the book, 'Yoga, Enlightenment and Perfection' of Sri Abhinav Vidyaeertha Mahaswami (AV), AV had done many types of sadhana including kundalini, advaita, bhakti on Narasimha, Hatha Yoga, and even meditated and had vision of Shardamba. He was in sannidhi with Amba. It is Amba who selects the disciple.

    Namaste Ji,

It is nice to know that the Sringeri Acharyas practice many streams,I used to wonder how they are able to talk deeply on many systems.

    Namaste ji,

Even the current Shankaracharya Sri bharati Teertha Mahaswami didnt watch any movie, no mobiles, only plain cloths during pre-sanyAsa days.

They are blessed by ISvara himself. the book, 'Yoga, Enlightenment and Perfection' of Sri Sri Abhinav Vidyateertha Mahaswami (AV) will clear all doubts.

He was given sanyasa when he was 15 and 1/2 years old and was declared as successor.

Bhagavan Shiva came into this young sanyasin's dream for 7 consecutive days and taught hatha yoga. Young Swami was not proficient in shastras at that time and he had hardly read Shankara bhashyas. He could not find some asanas in any books.

He was taught to be aware of Kundalini by Amba nad Sarasvati herself on different occassions. Devi would herself speak and he would hear her voice when she was guiding him e.g. Suddenly he would be aware of muladhara chakra and heard the voice in sanskrit, 'This is muladhara'. He even saw mantras in meditative state.

Likewise he also worshipped Narashimha bhagavan and developed so much intimacy that his guru used to sporting say, 'you are now a vaishnava'. His guru would put his hand on his disciple and than pass on the mantra and at times his guru used to pull back his hands and join with reverence when he saw Narasimha in his student. AV used to feel Narasimh bhagavan all the time. while bathing he used to feel that all the water is being offered to Narasimha and that all actions are directed towards him. This happened for one day. Next day the effect was not strong and he had to make efforts to feel that all actions are directed towards Narasimha Bhagavan. Then one day, the image in heart vanished and he experienced Narasimha as an antaryAmin, as a sUtrAtmA (formless).

Next he meditated on ambA. One day, he saw here feet as lively as that of living person. He raised his head and saw ambA herself in her full glory in front of her. She stayed for few minutes and then vanished into the idol. He meditated on her feet and he became so merged that he forgot his own identity and felt only ambA. This was bhAva samAdhi.

Later his guru put his hands on his head and chanted OM Namah Shivaya and asked him to meditate on Shiva on a nearby hill. AV remembered dakshinamurthy dhyana sloka and meditated on him. After one hour, he saw a snake loosely coiled round his neck with his fins on right side. AV remembered that he worshiped Shiva with snake as an ornament mantra AV was mesmerized. He cuddled the snake. It seems that snake liked it and it rested his fin on his right cheek. Snake stayed for some time and then left. Next time, Lord Shiva himself gave him a darshan, blessed him and ordered him to now meditate on nirguna brahman.

His guru initiated him into nirvikalp samadhi without Av informing Shiva order, as if his guru knew the divine order. Soon AV had realization of brahman and sometime later he was permanently rooted in brahman.

AV also meditated on nAda brahman and he used to hear sound of damaru in right ear and entered into samadhi. Something similar to laya yoga in this mind merges (laya) via sound.

This is the reason why they are called as jagadguru, as they have clear understanding by direct experience.

AV's guru used to explain him how his guru made him to enter into nirvikalp samadhi and then he asked him to do the same that his guru asked him to do. Both guru and shishya entered int osamadhi.

There was a time, when AV could not comeback from samadhi by his own. Guru Chandrashekhara Saraswati had to himself bring him down as he had to carry on the responsibility of peetham. Had Av's guru didnt brought him down from samadhi, AV would have left his body permanently.

Later his guru asked him to pay attention to the peetham and then his routine class of learning tarka continued. Av tried hard t ogenerate interest and his his guru's will, and by honoring his Guru's order, AV managed to generate interest in worldly affairs though himself remaining aloof from all activities.

In the same saw, AV taught his shishya, the current shankaracharya and made him to enter nirvikalp samadhi in the same way his guru made him to experience when he was a sAdhaka.

Av's story is truly inspiring for me.

AV also quoted Saraswati Rahasya Upanishad citing two ways to enter nirvikalp samadhi samadhi, though no one has quoted it, yet acharyas consider it to be authentic and teach it to his beloved disciple who would one day adorn the seat of the peetham.

Sringeri acharyas are far far away from polemical debates, authenticity stuff, etc and dedicate themselves to penances. They advice vedic life, chanting of vedas and doing duties as ordained in vedas. They also ask laymen to chant name of any form of ISvara and also give importance to Maha mantra.

I think due to such diverse divine experiences, they are truely a jagadguru, as they encourage one according to one's prakriti. they teach everything, karma, bhakti, Jnana, Yoga, Hatha Yoga, laya Yoga, emple worship and so agamas, etc.

Only thing is that they consider Nirvikalp samadhi as the highest.

I have written abruptly from my memory. Maybe some day, I will put his life in proper words and directly quote from the book.
