I would also like to add another interesting astronomical facet which makes sun and moon stand apart from other planets.
They cannot ever be retrograde and therefore have only one movement. Even rahu-ketu in their true state can describe both forward and backward movements, although their rulerships etc are not as universally-accepted as is true for the five non-luminous planets. Now someone may argue that strictly speaking, even moon becomes visible due to reflected light like other planets and sun alone is the true luminary, but luminary is just a label and perhaps arises from western astrological terminology.
Be that what it may, the assigned rulerships of the two ever-forward indicators (sun and moon) in a sense form the central point in the zodiac with remaining planets straddling their signs in same order as their orbits around the sun. Hence, 11-12-1-2-3-(4.5)-6-7-8-9-10.
They form the functional Kendra in astrological framework and are unique!
