Thread: Gayatri mantra & Ramayan

  1. Gayatri mantra & Ramayan

    HI All,
I read some where that Valmiki had written Ramayana as a commentary form of Gayatri Mantra and with around 24000 slokas, 1000 slokas for each Bija Akshara. Can any one please explain this ?

    Thanks,Ramesh

    Namaste

Our Shastra is not just meaningful explanation or narration. It is embibed in chhanda (meters) -- and this extends beyond the core Vedas (Rg SAm Yajur Atharva) -- like anushTup chhanda being used for Bhagavad GeetA.

It is not at all surprising that Valmiki wrote RamayaN in such a way that each 1000 shlokas are the "vistaar" (expansions) of 24 syllables, "beeja" (seeds) of the GayatrI mantra. It means the saar i.e. ESSENCE of RAmAyaN is the GAyatrI. Yes, our scriptures are esoteric.

For that matter, each syllable of Gayatri corresponds to one of 24 names of Lord VishNu

Meditate on the meaning of GayatrI -- whom is it addressed to?
    Whom does it glorify?
tat savitur vareNyam. That brightest One (bhargo deva) we adore and glorify, Who is the only one worth adoring.

Meditate on the artha - meaning of each name (nAma) of Lord VishNu that goes with each syllable.
    What is all this about?
tat savitur vareNyam bhargo devasya dheemahI -- we meditate on that Brightest One.
    Why? What for?
dheeyo yo nah prachodayAt -- we request the One to uplift our intellect to righteousness and knowledge of Him (that One)

Who is VishNu? Is He the One addressed in the prayer that is the GayatrI? Certainly. All-pervading One and Only.
What is the RAmAyaN really about ?
    Who is Shri RAma ?
Why do we study the life history of BhagvAn Shri RAmachandra?
How does it pave our spiritual journey?
How does the goal of gAyatrI meditation coincide with the goal of RAmAyaN meditation?
    ----

Here is a comparative example that gives a hint / clue to think about how Vedopanishad and itihAs-purAN (our scriptural base) is laid out:

The chatuh-shlokI bhAgvat :This is the summary / gist of the entire BhAgvat PurAn of 18000 verses in 4 densely packed verses.
This chatuh-shlokI bhAgvat was narrated by Lord NArAyaNa the Ultimate Supreme Lord to Lord BramhA -- and you must read it if you haven't - SB 2 . It is the ESSENCE , purpose and saar (gist) of the entire BhAgvat. (O BramhA, all this is but Me, by anvaya (direct) and vyatireka (indirect) ) clay --- anvaya pot --- vyatireka. So give up your Creative Ego)

This is amazingly mimmicked by the patterns shown in the universes --
    dense -----> sparse,
beeja -----> mantra ----> expanded shloka ------> expanded itihas or geetA

    ---

Look at Bhagavad Geeta -- its chhanda (meter) of chanting is anushTup chhanda. It is not simply a logical sequence of explanatory shlokas. How do they fit so well in the chhanda? So, there is more to chanting Geeta than just understanding the meaning. It has a resonating effect. Also, every chapter is supposed to have a "lead" or "key" or "gist" shloka.
These scriptures are not only read for understanding, but chanting them - pArAyaN - also requires a method. Therefore the pArAyaN includes nyAs, keelakam, astram and one beeja (seed) or one shloka (verse) is the keelakam (KEY) or seed for the whole chant.

    Re: Gayatri mantra & Ramayan

There is a Gayatri-Ramayanam, consisting of Slokas sourced from the Valmiki Ramayanam, corresponding to each letter of the Gayatri mantram.

For example - Tapasswaadhyaaya niratham thapaswee vaagvidhaam varam |
Naradam paripappruccha Valmikir munipungavam || relates to the letter "Ta" of Tat-Savitur-Varenyam.

I have a copy of this book published by RS Vadhyar and Sons, Palghat.

Based on this collection of slokas, it is presumed that the entire VR has been created by the Rishi, as an elucidation of the Gayatri Mantram. Sri Rama belonged to Surya-Vamsam, and he worshipped Surya, this is well known by all. Also Rshi Vishwamitra who SAW the Gayatri mantra, was a preceptor of Sri Rama.

That makes perfect sense and fits well together. Thanks.
