Namaste,
The pre- and post- shlokas vary between North/West and South. The booklet I was given has the entire Bheeshma YudhisThir conversation (pre) and Arjun-KrshNa conversation (post).
The VishNu SahasranAma is primarily from Mahabharat and that is where the pre and post shlokas come from.
There seems to be a Padma PurAN version, because the Mahabharat version does not have the PArvati - Shankar conversation (and Shri RAma RAma RAmeti) that the Shri VaishNavas generally chant post-VS, nor does my booklet have the BG shloka that is appended.
The Shri VaishNava generally have a different set of shlokas in the post - VS (from what I have -- which I have also posted in pieces on another thread) but most of these shloka at least have a source
a) Mahabharat
b) Padma PurAN
c) Bhagwad GeetA
d) BhAgwat PurAN (kAyena vAchA.... SB 11)
However, I am yet to find the source of this specific shloka that VirajAji has brought up. Typically chanted 3 times after the core VS and before the post-VS (Mahabharat) shlokas begin.
It is beautiful in any case.
