    Prasthana Traya

    Hello,

I have a question about studying Advaita Vedanta: If you only study the Prasthana Traya (Gita, Upanishads & Brahma Sutras) through the talks of Swami Paramarthanada and focus exclusively on that is there any need to study the Prakarana Granthas?

    Thanks for reading,

    Namaste Megabite,

Prakaran Granthas are based on Prasthan Traya. Prasthan traya are the authority. I would help you understand Advaita VedAnta philosophy better if you read Prasthan traya.

The Prakarana granthas are many and varied; the Upanishads themselves are counted 8; 10; 11; 108 and more. Beyond a point͵ they are Vaag vaikhari only. Sravanam Mananam Nididhyasanam might help more.

    Namaste Megabite,

1stly one must understand why we are reading these Shastras , we are reading them to solve the human problem.

Advaita Vedanta is the only Shastra that diagnoses the human problem and then presents a solution to it. Now what is the problem we have, the problem we have is that we are unsatisfied, the reason for not being satisfied as per the Sampradaya is because everyone is looking for unboundedness or limitlessness.

Once a person realises this it is only then that such a person will try to find the solution. He or she cannot stand limitations. When a person can no longer stand limitations such a person is called a "Mumukshu". There must be a burning desire to break free of all limitations.

So 1st ask yourself if you have such a burning desire or not. Then at this point you will yourself search for a Guru, or you will automatically attract a Guru who is realised.
It will only be required that you simply listen to the Guru, it wont matter whether he is teaching from a Prakarana texts or from the Prasthanatraya text. Since all texts are only meant for one thing and that is Moksha or liberation.
