Hindu or none ... the new choice.

Vannakkam: The largest growing 'religion' group in America are the nones (no affiliation with any religion). It will impact us too. The first generation of Hindu immigrants raised in America are also making that choice.

    Here's the article. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ananta...b_7348140.html

I hope this hasn't already been put here somewhere.

    Namaste,

In my observation, immigrant parents are stumbled with the daunting role of parenting. They do not know whether to impose one's religion and tutor the kids to absorb their birth religion or not to educate them, given the surrounding is different. They are confused about how religious tutoring will impact children, and how children who are thus tutored will react when exposed to majority people following other religion or when they are treated negatively (rarely but possible) on the basis of their religion. On top of all this, they do not have much time to educate children in religion, and other media like TV shows do not tutor the 2nd and 3rd generation kids about their religion. I myself is confused by all this, when rearing our 2nd generation children in Hinduism in the USA. It is a very daunting situation. My son does not know the abc of Hinduism, however daughter is going to Indian school on Sundays, and picking up Hinduism for the past 5 yrs.

    Cheers!

Vannakkam Viraja: Indeed it's daunting. But I don't mind 'none' either. None of my children follow Hinduism anywhere near to the way I do. They all kept their vegetarianism, and are net givers to society, though, which is fine by me. You can't force them to take it up ... maybe as children, but certainly not as adults. Forcing or undue pressure would be against the very nature of our faith. I've always felt there had to be some inherent sense of it within themselves, in other words some mystical experience, however simple. Otherwise it can't make sense. Still, they haven't strayed to foreign adharmic faiths, which is a great thing.

As communities go, I've observed that the larger the community, the higher likelihood they'll stay. Out in some small town with no Hindu friends ... highly unlikely. But at a vibrant temple or cultural group with other kids in the same boat ... quite possible, even likely.

My son had non-veg all through his school years, EM ji! My husband thought it would make life easier for him as a college student and as a grown-up! BUT my son has adhered to Vegetarianism on his own (from a Jain friend influence) and has kept at it for the past several years!

One thing I noted is that Indian kids of immigrant parents (2nd generation kids) always make best friends among themselves (mostly). I feel religion plays a role and possibly those with strong religious identity feel alien while mingling with others with different practices... whereas my son predominantly has American (White) and Chinese friends than Indian friends...Sometimes as parents, me and my hubby wish he had more Indian friends as then their parents would have become our friends... this is how friendships among Indians works out in a foreign land! But my son has picked up few good things (in attitude) from Western friends, too. As he is 20, wonder who he will marry in the coming decade... Given his alienation from Hindu culture, his choice maybe anyone... this is one area that concerns all naturalized citizens of USA from India, they mostly want to perpetuate their religion and culture through the future generations.

Re: Hindu or none ... the new choice.

This is a result of leftist INDOCTRINATION. There is no question about it. And they are the enemy of Hinduism, they indoctrinate and brainwash our children in our public schools with a NEW religion, the worship of obese central government and socialism and their demagogues and leftwing socialist and communist politicians such as Obama. Their toadies called "educators" who demand worship of the government censor students, they ban anyone who counters their commandments to worship the lies of these leftist tyrants, they give the student an "F" if the student does not worship government and their bureaucrats and politicians.

"None" does NOT mean unaffiliated, it means either you are now affiliated with the religion and cult that worships obese government control, worships their leftist ideologues such as Obama, and these fanatics censor and oppress freedom to be a Hindu, they will NEVER tolerate True Hinduism because Hinduism does not worship demagogues, does not worship government, does not worship the likes of Obama, because Hinduism is not socialism.

AND "None" also means those who are now AFRAID to say they are a Hindu because they know they will be under the thumb and the hammer of these demagogues. They are afraid to say what and who they are.

These are the two reasons you see "None". Indoctrination and fear.

And as far as these leftwing servants of this worship of government, who have drunk this koolaid and their lies and false naratives, they are not much more than childish fools who grovel before the boot of this new religion that threatens Hinduism, and because their worship of this indoctrination and boot is more important than anything else, to them certainly more important than Hinduism, they will do anything to silence a Hindu such as me who will not grovel with them. They think they are the "teacher" and issue out the "F" grade. They are nothing but our enemy. They are the TRUE NONE which is the new religion of government as God.

    I AM a Hindu.

    Namaste ShivaFan,

Let's spell it out... You are referring to FOIL - Forum of Inquilabi Leftists. They are a very big threat to the Dharmic way of life. http://www.ahouseofcards.net/groups/foil/

No worries Virajaji. Because Bhagvat-krupA (blessings) is being showered on him, and since you have brought him up your son will be a good citizen of the United States, the Americas, the world, the Universe, and also a good person of Indian Origin to those in India.
This is what makes children beautiful after all. His American friends also shape him.
When your son is 28 or 30 he will calm down and his outward search will slow down. Then he will open your Bhagvad Gita, Ramayan, Shloka, bhajans, and his feet will be attracted to the mandir of BhagavAn.

Is that from personal experience with a son born and raised here in US or wishful thinking?
There is a big gap between sentimental statements and reality.

No, it stems from vishwAs, trust, but more importantly, I said he will be a good citizen of the world. A parent should feel content with that in itself. That itself is a blessing for the child's own well-being, Sattva going uphill
I am way past the stage of life that you mention and am still waiting for the miracle to happen.
Oh come on Believer ji, you can't expect me to believe that, but if it is true, the bhajan posted above is for you --

When Virajaji reads my post aloud, it will be evening sandhyA for her and an auspicious time when Shankar-PArvatI roam in space saying "tathAstu"
