Today is mahaśivarātri ; śivarātri ( śiva + rātri or the night of śiva) falls on the 14th lunar day ( tithi) or caturdaśī ;
this tithi is owned by śiva. It is that tithi that spills into āmāvāsyá ( the new moon).
It is therefore ahar . This ahar is defined as a sacrificial or festival day , portion of a sacrifice appointed for one day's performance.
Yet with the rules of saṃdhi applied ahar becomes ahaḥ. If we look at each term we may see a certain insight a+ha+ḥ.
- a is another name for the Supreme; it is recognized ( in the 6 derivation of ‘a’) as viṣṇu
- ha – used in the masculine gender is a form of śiva or bhairava
- ḥ is called visarga and is defined as sending forth , letting go , liberation , emission , discharge; It too is another name for śiva
that is called out in the mahābhārata.
This visarga (some write visarjana) written in devanāgarī looks like this : In English it is called a colon mark.
According to tradition this : has an upper and lower dot and defined as soma on the top and sūrya on the bottom.
Note that on śivarātri , caturdaśī tithi is active. It is that tithi that spills into āmāvāsyá ( the new moon).
So then soma (śakti,Śrī devī, pārvatī) and sūrya (śiva) come together on the 15th tithi, the one following caturdaśī tithi and it is then
āmāvāsyá ( the new moon). This is what is occurring on mahaśivarātri. Two becomes one.
It just so happens that this ahaḥ is the 90th name of viṣṇu that is called out in the viṣṇu sahasrānam.
And when we gain some insight we exclaim, ah! aha! . It is delightful ( it seems to me)
that with this exclamation one has śiva and viṣṇu on their lips. It is this ‘ah’ that is also defined as delight, pleasure,
knowledge. We take delight (ah) when we comprehend something that perhaps was hidden in the past.
Perhaps with this post an ah! aha! is available to the HDF reader regarding mahaśivarātri. It seems to me that
mahaśivarātri is all about internalizing and living ahaḥ at all times i.e. remembering I (aham) am non-different than this ahaḥ.
That is the ah! aha!
iti śivaṁ
