Namaste,

Swami Sivananda , like Dr.Albert Schweitzer, was a doctor who gave up his lucrative career in Malaya and returned back to India at the age of 36, with the twin goals of attaining Self-realization and serving humanity. Dr.Schweitzer travelled to Africa to provide medical relief to the Africans over there, in the spirit of karma yoga inspired by Jesus and Krishna. Dr.Schweitzer found in the Bhagavad Gita "a profound influence on the spirit of mankind by its devotion to God which is manifested by actions." Similarly , Swami Sivananda dedicated the rest of his life to the service of God by the service of humanity and all living beings.

He established the Divine Life Society, with its motto of "Love all, serve all" and this institution with 300 branches around the world continues to provide light on yoga to all of humanity.

Swami Chidananda, Swami Chinmayananda and Swami Krishnananda were some of his greatest disciples.

Swami Chinmayananda and Swami Jyotirmayananda went on to create new institutions on their own inspired by their Guru.

Here is a beautiful account by Swami Sivanandaji of his life as a student, doctor , practising professional and later on a Sannyasin and Guru.
