    You are not wrong about samadhi, as samadhi means union and when union is attained liberation from birth and death is also attained.
    Let's look to what rāmaṇa maharṣi says.

    Q: What is mokṣa ?
    A: Mokṣa is to know that you were never born 1.

    This is confirmed in the
    bhāgavad gītā ( chapter 2 called sāṅkhyayoga, 12th verse)
    natvevāhaṁ jātu nāsaṁ na tvaṁneme janādhipāḥ|
    na caiva na bhaviṣyāmaḥ sarve vayamataḥ param||

    this says,
    there never was a time when I was not
    ( kṛṣṇaḥ is speaking to arguna) nor you, nor these
    rulers amongst men; nor will there ever come a time when we all cease to be ||

    So, when
    rāmaṇa maharṣi says 'mokṣa is to know you were never born' , it is to realize the truth of this 12th verse offered by
    Yet if your frame of reference stays within the notion that 'I' am this person called yajvan, or bill, or sue, or tim, and this person as an individual has a beginning middle and end, that it is a bundle of flesh, nerves and organs that only wakes, dreams and sleeps, then it will be difficult to grasp the notion of never being born ( and never ceasing to be). For this to have the highest appreciation one needs to be acquainted with Being/pure awareness, that is boundless.

    Within this samādhi, it can be with eyes closed or with eyes open. When the eyes are open it suggests the sādhu has stabilized the level of samādhi to even experience it while in activity.
    I think this is a very important point. What I have noticed is that samadhi has become quite a buzz word, often times translated as the ultimate stage or a supreme trance like state, like being totally absorbed into another world, or a deep meditation trance absorbed in cross legged position in a cave. Yet its much more than that and can be applied in normal life with the eyes open and the world then appears as a living experience within union of the all pervasive, or at least there are moments and blessings along the way to see this, this is due to direct experience of samadhi. Samadhi has been translated as union, so that can happen with eyes open or closed, asleep or awake.

    Samadhi has such a rich texture in the traditions, in theravada samadhi is a key part of development, sila~morality, control of body speech and mind, samadhi, development of the supramental faculty, through meditation, insight and mindfulness and panna wisdom prajna enlightenment recognition of Buddha. As Yajvan said in one post about the limbs of patanjali all growing at the same time, so too with sila, samadhi and panna develop in balance and are not separate from each other. So while samadhi is seen as the ultimate state its also part of the growing into and transformation.

    I see Samadhi as anugraha, or grace, bhakti or at least part of it, this in itself will have deep layers, in the bhakti tradition samadhi is experienced through bhavas and rasa, I noticed a couple things while studying Bhagavatam and it seems that the commentary is explained in layers of samadhi. So it appeared that all of the sanskrit texts reveal more deeper meaning through samadhi and anugraha. The deeper the samadhi the deeper the knowledge or an inherent sense of knowing.

    Also within discourses knowledge is revealed in stages of samadhi, in the pali suttas kevatta sutta the yogi travels round the cosmos meeting the devas of 33 to ask them a question and the method of transport was samadhi, the deeper his samadhi went the higher deva he met and each pointed to the one above him, samadhi was part the ascension process, anugraha, gradually revealing knowledge to the seeker kevatta.

    Samadhi is seen as the supra state, supra meaning above, so its higher or beyond our ordinary level of being, its something that comes from outside or beyond or above the ordinary sense of being, im not talking of an outside God or force, but something that is transcendent and above para, as Sri Krsna describes BG3.42. At the same time it wont fully transcend that being, more of the nature of purifying it or making one whole again, samadhi, anugraha gives us access to the awakening of the whole.

    There is a lot to say about this and learn, and how it transforms us and how it is developed or attracted and which conditions it reveals itself. While samadhi is seen as something very deep which it is also its part of our human experience, so not always a million miles or lifetimes away, even though it may transform our very nature its not foreign or a phantasmagoria of some imagined supra state of consciousness that so often gets sensationalized with, its not abstract although it can never truly be defined and sectioned by the empirical senses or brought under the laws of scientific intellect. Its more vast and beautiful and subtle and all knowing and is only known through devotion or perhaps as part of my post anugraha~bhakti.

    CHARACTERISTICS OF SAMADHIWhen the mind is completely absorbed in one object of meditation, it is termed Samadhi. The mind identifies itself with the object of meditation.
    In Samadhi, there is neither seeing nor hearing. There is neither physical nor mental consciousness. There is only spiritual consciousness.
