What exactly is bhu-mandala and the 7 dweepas?

Hello, i'm quite interested in Puranic Cosmology and wish to know things in detail like mandalas, dweepas and the varshas. They all seem very fascinating to me. It"s like the ancient Bharatiyans knew so much more, than what modern science and astronomy tells us today. I tried reading a few articles about the seven dweepas from Jambu to Pushkara dweepa, and also the varshas in them , but had a hard time understanding them. Some articles say that these dweepas are continents of our spherical earth, while others like the ISKCONITES have theorized that the 7 dweepas are planets of our solar system.

So what exactly is Bhu-mandala ? What is Jambudweepa and the other 7 dweepas? Are they physical or subtle planes of existence?
Need a detail explanation on this topic. Quotes from Puranas would be helpful as well. Thanks.

Thanks Indialover, i've been visiting that site for the last few years and i must admit it has some very good articles, but those are just theories and speculations, made by the owner of that blog. No offense to him or anything , i really like his posts, but those are his opinions. From only one man. One cannot consider them to be the truth. When more and more people say the same thing after rigorous studies, only then we can consider them as being close to the truth.
I'm more interested in the interpretations of puranic scholars, or the commentaries of the ancient rishis, if there are any. Thank You
