Thread: Kaikeyi character in Ramayana epic.

    Kaikeyi character in Ramayana epic.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaikeyi

Can you elaborate on Kaikeyi's character
    in Ramayana?

Can you classify her as good or evil?

Kaikeyi send Lord Rama, Seeta & Lakshman
to exile for 14 years through King Dashratha.

Does this reflect her motherly love for
her son Bharath?. But this love at the cost
of sending Lord Rama, Seeta & Lakshman to
    Canvas?

Do you feel Kaikeyi had the future vision of
Lord Rama killing Ravana only after Lord Rama
    is in Vanvas or Exile?

    Thanks & Regards,

    Thanks.

My views & opinion on Kaikeyi.

    It shows Kaikeyi's motherly love
specifying a mother can go beyond limits for her children showering love, sacrifices.
Can we call this as Selfless or Selfish love?

I will call it Selfish love.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Namaste

There was a curse on Dasharatha. Once he accidentally killed Shravan Kumar, the only son of a couple.
His father cursed Dasharatha to too experience grief due to the loss of a son and to die alone, without his son near him.

Someone was needed to fulfill this curse. It was Kaikeyi.

Valmiki and Vyasa are just telling a story. They do not judge.

Why do we try to find the good one and the bad one, the right and the wrong? In Ramayana it is Kaikeyi, in Mahabharata it is Duryodhana.

Why not just be a witness and accept these perfect epics as they are?

    Don't forget --

Manthara, Kaikeyi's maid, instigated all of these events.

Yes, Manthara is the one who made Kaikeyi remember Dasharatha’s two boons he had promised her years ago.

We see, destiny started weaving long before.

Why didn’t Kaikeyi express the wishes at the time?
Why did Dasharatha grant two boons?

One boon would have been enough to make Bharata king.
The second boon, banishing Rama, lead to fulfill the curse laying on Dasharatha.
Both boos made Ramayana happen and finally the killing of Ravana, the reason for Narayana’s coming down to earth as Rama.

I could not have said it better.

The trove of Hindu sacred literature is for reading and reflecting upon. We have to dig into the intricacies of the events without using our puny intellects to pass judgement. These shashtras are sacred texts unlike novels or movie plots where you have to have a protagonist and a villain. Each and every being mentioned in them performed what was required of them which resulted in chain of events for divine knowledge to be revealed.

Ram was a prince in Ayodhaya but was transformed into Maryada Purushotam Bhagwan Ram through the exile. We had to learn about total surrender and living in the service of Bhagwan through Hanuman. We had to have Ravan removed from this earth. We had to have King Dashrath cry and suffer and die from the pain of separation from his son to fulfill the curse of Shravan Kumar's father. All this could not happen without Bhagwan Ram's Vanvaas.

It is said that after abducting Sita, Ravan used to be very sad. His wife asked him the reason and he said that he visited Sita every day but she had not looked at him even once. His wife said that he had so many powers of maya that he could create a golden deer, why could he not put on a Ram-like face through maya so that Sita would look at him. His answer, "I thought about that too but every time I put on a Ram-like face, every woman other than you looked like a mother or a sister or a daughter to me". For this to be taught to us, Ram had to be exiled and Sita had to be abducted.

Duryodhan had to deny the Pandavs any right to their kingdom and force the Mahabharat war for the mighty Arjun to get shaky knees and Shri Krishan to recite the Bhagwad Gita to steady him. We must learn from the 'good' and the 'unpleasant' deeds without labeling the characters as good or bad. They played out their destined parts in the celestial dramas for the divine knowledge to be revealed.

Please read the scriptures with an eye towards what we can learn from them and not with the idea of critiquing them or critiquing any of the characters in them. Stay focussed on divine knowledge being revealed through each act and not worry about the motives or performance of actors. They are vehicles for delivering divine knowledge to us.

Re: Kaikeyi character in Ramayana epic.

    Namaste Believer,

you call Rama 'maryada purushottama' and give me the chance to expand my knowledge.

I know these types of avatar: Purusha, Lila, Guna, Manvantara, Yuga. Furtheron Amsha and Purna avatar.
Rama and Krishna are Purna and Lila avatars.

    Wikipedia says
Rama is considered a maryada purushottama or the best of upholders of Dharma.

Does this mean that 'maryada purushottama' does only apply to Rama?
I there a similar designation for Krishna?

    Thanks

I am not starting a new trend, that is how He is honored in our scriptures.

None that I can think of right now.

Perhaps someone else will come along to answer your question in more detail.

Re: Kaikeyi character in Ramayana epic.

My question referred to Purushottama only, Believer.

I thought when Rama ist Maryada Purushottama, Krishna could be ??? Purushottama.
But seems not to be …
