    Bhagavatam Canto 11 - Uddhava Gita

    Namaste

    Chapter 27, verse 28 mentions eight associates of whom I have never heard and cannot find an explanation anywhere.

    [He also honors] Garuda, Nanda, Sunanda, Pracanda and Canda, Mahâbala, Bala, Kumuda and Kumudekshana [My carrier bird and eight associates].

    Who are these eight associates?

    Thanks and Pranam.

    Namaste,

    Strange, I too searched and couldn't find any reference to the said names. Looks like they are associates of Garuda, those who serve him.

    [edit] I find some relevance and mention of those associate names under here: https://electric-guide.com/en/garuda...a-ezdovye.html

    Thanks.

    Thanks for the interesting link Vijaya.

    I kept searching and found five (marked red) of the eight - Nr. 21 in this link
    https://www.academia.edu/40361683/DA...ATHI_ATTAVANAI

    Slokams : Hey Poorva/Dakshina/Paschima/Uthara Dwarasthaa: ......
    (Sing the appropriate songs for each praakaaram followed by the respective Prakaara Rakshana Slokam, addressing Bhagavathotthamaas in each Prakaaram :

    Dwarastha seems to mean ‚entrance‘.
    Prakaram seems to be the ‚outer part around the Hindu temple sanctum‘.

    This means they are guardians/gate keepers.

    East : Jaya Vijaya;
    South : Chanda Prachanda;
    West : Sanaka, Sananthana, kumuda, Kumudekshana;
    North : Prahlaada, Dhruva, Bhala, Prbhala (Prbhala may be Mahabala?)

    to guard against disturbances in the Prakaarams of the Sanctum
    Sanctorium because the Lord with Devi is in YOGA NIDHRA.)

    May be
    Nanda, Sunanda are different names for Jaya and Vijaya?
    Chanda, Prachanda are different names for Sanatana and Sanatkumara?
    Kumuda, Kumudekshana are different names for Sanaka, Sananthana?
    Bhala, Prbhala are different names for Prahlaada and Dhruva?

    That would make sense ... why does the Bhagavatam use these 'unknown' names?

    Pranam
