    The 'Not Made" ...

    Hari Om
    ~~~~~~
    Namaste,
    There is a wonderful verse in the Mundaka (the shaving) Upanishad. It deals with higher knowledge or para vidya and lower knowledge of our created world, or apara vidya.
    Before we start it could be asked what an unusual name for a Upanishad, no? This Upanishad is considered for the ones that have taken the vow of the head. This is still curious. As one choses to become a sannyasin, the munda or mundaka, or 'the shaving' of the head ( hair) occurs. The Upanishad , it is said, is for this sanyasi.
    The total upanishad is well worth the read, yet this post is on chapt 2, verse (or valli) 12. I am just taking one phrase or sutra from the full mantra, it says nasti akrtah krtena, and lets adjust it so it reads, krtena akrtah na asti to make comprehension a bit easier.
    It says attaining the akrtah (some write akritah), the uncreated, the not-made. What is not made? the Absolute, Brahman or aksara from a or not + ksi, to destroy or perish...
    We continue, as it says is not possible to attain through any 'made-up' means. The made-up is taking liberty with this word krta, at its root, it's kr, 'to do'. We find it in krta or action, and find it in use in Karma, actions of doing, make happen, making up.
    So the Absolute aksara is not attainable through krta. This is the extracted wisdom here, of this rishi who knows Brahman. OK, so what does this say? It says the pursuit of doing is not the path to the Absolute. Why is the rishi telling us this? Because we are do-ers, yes?
    We work, we achieve, we try, we push and push to knock obstacles out of our way, we live in a world driven by physics, action and reactions. Yet this risi says, pound your head against the wall with krta, it is not achievable the way one climbs a hill, or runs for a touch down or football by this effort krta.
    So all is lost for one's seeking this aksara? This is where technique comes in. On how to unfold and realize the SELF. In this upanishad and this mantra it says to seek the wisdom of the Brahmanishtha. One established in this Absolute, then the Absolute is talking to you in the flesh.
    It is also taught in the Katha Upainshad, Adi Shankara's comment ' to him who makes an exclusive choice of the SELF, the SELF reveals its own body'. As Sri Aurobindo says it this way, ' He who chooses the SELF is chosen by the SELF.
    As we return to the Mundaka Upanishad, it says in Chapt 3.2.3 , The atman cannot be obtained by much study of the vedas or intelligence or much learning. He whom the SELF Chooses, by him the SELF can be gained. To him this atman reveals its true nature.
    Now what to do? What is this technique? It's to set up the conditions for the SELF to realize itSELF to itSELF. This is technique, this is the wisdom. For those sadhu's that are on this path, note that the SELF has chosen you already. For us, its to allow the conditions to be ripe for the SELF to introduce itSELF to itSELF.
    This is why one meditates, to prepare the soil, to create the conditions...
    pranams,
