    Sri Lagna - for the Jyotish sisya

    Hari Om
    ~~~~~
    Namaste,
    This informatioin is offered on Sunday AM, in the hora owned by Chandra, in the Nakshatra of Aswini ( the first Nakshatra in the zodiac), of Krsna Navami tithi ( owned by Durga).
    Note this is the tradition's knowledge , not mine. As I have informed most on HDF , I know little to nothing , and pass on what I know as an offering to the Tradition. That means for those sisya's that read this, leave the ego at the door and please use this information wisely...it is on loan to you.
    This post is the method for calculating Sri Lagna and more for the sudent of Jyotish, yet all are welcomed to read.
    Sri Lagna - It is the Lakshmi sthana in ones chart. Dhana Lakshmi gives money yes? Yet Dhanya gives food, Arogya Lakshmi gives health, Vidya Lakshmi gives knowledge, Gaja lakshmi gives vehicles, and My favorite, Moksha Lakshmi gives liberation.
    In simple terms
    A calculation of the moons progression within it's Janma Nakshatra as a % , then added to the lagna position in degrees
    Steps to follow, then an example. We will use 'native 1' chart and Mahatma Ghandi's chart. A final Example will be given w/o the calulations, for Yogananda's chart, and giving the answer of Sri Lagna's position. See of you get the same location.
    1. Find how far Chandra, moon has advanced in it's Janma Nakshatra position
    2. Find what that advancement is , in percent % [ Y degrees/13 degrees 20 min]
    3. Multiply the % calculated in point 2 , by 360 degrees
    4. Add that product (the result of point 3) to the Lagna's longitude
    5. The resulting degree/ number gives you the location of Sri Lagna's position
    Example 1 - Native 1
    • Chandra resides in Taurus, in Rohini Nakshatra at 16 degrees 33 min Taurus ( this is typically written 16 Taurus 33')
    • If one looks in Taurus , one will see Rohini owns 10 Taurus 00' to 23 Taurus 20'
    • Point of consideration: Each nakshatra , there's 27 in the Zodiac (called Bha Chakra), occupies 13 degrees 20 minutes longitude
    • So, 13 degrees 20 min X 27 Nakshatras = 360 degrees, or the zodiac.
    • Now, Chandra resides 16 degrees 33 min. If Rohini STARTS at 10 Taurus 00', then Chandra has advanced 6 degrees 33 min. in Rohini.
    • 6 degrees 33 min divided by 13 degrees 20 min ( the total degrees in rohini nakshatra) = .49125 or 49.125%
    • .49125 X 360 degrees = 176 degrees 51 min 00 seconds
    • FYI a calculator that does degrees min and second is most handy. I use a Sharp EL531L [ probably not made any more. Very handy!)
    • ADD this number 176 degrees 51 min 00 seconds to the ascendant's longitude:
      • Ascendant = 07 Scorpio 59' min 00" sec.
      • You can convert 07 Scorpio 59' min 00" sec to longitude and that = is 7 signs X 30 degrees + 07 Scorpio 59' min 00" = 217 degrees 59 min 00 Sec
      • Add the answer found above in step 5 or 176 degrees 51 min 00 seconds to 217 degrees 59 min 00 sec = 402 degrees 49 min 00 sec
      • Subtract ( my teacher says expunge) 360 degrees from this: 402 degrees 49 min 00 sec - 360 degrees 00 min 00 sec = 42degrees 49 min.
      • Now the 'pure' longitudes from Aries is now available, subtract 1 sign, or 30 degrees 00 min 00 sec , as we have gone past Aries , or the first 30 degrees of Aries, and we arrive at 42 degrees 49 min 00 sec - 30 degrees 00 min 00 sec = 12 Taurus 49'
    • Sri Lagna resides in 12 Taurus 49 ' 00 '' or Rohini , by coincidence! And on the 1st pada ( a pada is 3 degrees 20 sec) of Rohini.
    Example 2 - Ghandhi's chart [ data shown below ]
    • Moon's location = 27 Cn 45' 09.03" ;Nakshatra = Aslesha ( note Cn abbreviation = Cancer)
    • Aslesha Nakshatra runs from 16 Cn 40' 00 " to 30 Cn 00' 00"
    • 27 Cn 45 ' 09.03" minus 16 Cn 40' 00 " = 11 degrees 05' 09.03" or how many degrees Chandra has advanced in Aslesha
    • 11 degrees 05' 09.03" divided by 13 degrees 20 min ( or one full Nakshatra) = .831438128 [ 83.1438%] or how far the moon has advanced in Aslesha Nakshatra
    • .831438128 X 360 degrees = 299 degrees 19 ' 03.81"
    • Add 299 degrees 19 ' 03.81" to Ghandhi's Lagna 0 Li 33' 25.03"
    • FYI: 0 Li 33' 25.03" = [6 signs X 30 Degrees + 00 degrees 33' 25.03"] + 299 degrees 19 ' 03.81" = 479 degrees 52 min 28.84 sec.
    • Expunge 360 degrees from this number:
      • 479 degrees 52 min 28.84 sec. - 360 degrees 00' 00" = 119 degrees 52 min 28.84 sec.
      • 119 degrees 52 min 28.84 sec. = 3 signs ( 3 X 30 degrees = 90 degrees) + 29 degrees 52 min 28.84 sec.
    • 3 signs from Aries are completed + 29 degrees 52 min 28.84, therefore:
    • Sri Langa = 29 degrees 52 min 28.84 Cancer - Nakshatra of Aslesha.
    Thanks for the information shared on Sri Lagna.
    You have mentioned that :
    "Sri Lagna - It is the Lakshmi sthana in ones chart. Dhana Lakshmi gives money yes? Yet Dhanya gives food, Arogya Lakshmi gives health, Vidya Lakshmi gives knowledge, Gaja lakshmi gives vehicles, and My favorite, Moksha Lakshmi gives liberation.".
    A) Does Sri Lagna indicate all the above ie;1)Money 2)Health
    3) Knowledge 4)Vehicles and 5)Moksha .
    B) How do we interpret after arriving at Sri Lagna?
    Eg : Sri Gandhiji's Chart :
    Sri Lagna 29 Cn 52' 28.94"
    ie;Ayilya Nakshatra.
    1)Do we take into consideration the Lord of Cancer ie;Moon
    2)or the Yogakaraka Planets (Sun and Mars as per Vedic Astrology)for Cancer House
    3)or the Aspects of Planets on Cancer House
    4)or The Planets situated in Cancer House.
    Please reply.
    Namaste Arvind (et .al)
    The question asked is no small matter ... Let me see if I can give you what you are requesting w/o over-doing it.
    For those interested in Jyotish, this may be of interest. For the the casual reader, Arvind has asked me 'what time is it?' and I cannot answer without informing him on how to build the watch!
    So, I will not build the watch completely as this requires a substantial in-depth conversation on Vedic Jyotish matters. I will though give a flavor of what this (Sri Lagna) is and how it works.
    [ as you know this knowledge is that of the tradition, and we thank them for their wisdom. We thank Sri Lakshmi for her blessings on this matter, as it is Her shakti we discuss - Om Sri Mahalakshmi Namaha ]
    First, Some Run Way
    We will use Native 1's information from the previous post. Using Gandhi's information will take more explaining, so we go with the simpler-is-better approach.
    For Native 1, the Sri Lagna position appears in Taurus, the the Nakshatra of Krittika [ please review the very first post on this subject above].
    Sri Lakshmi starts there and She moves throughout the various houses. This is new information for you. That is, there is a specific count that Sri Lagna moves as the native ages.
    She moves though Kendras first, then panapharas and then apoklimas. There are specific rules of movement, forward, backwords. And if Sri Lagna encounters specific graha's, the the rules change. So as you can see, bit of an overall endeavor to explain succinctly.
    Looking at Sri Lagna's Dasa system -
    There is a rasi dasa system that depicts the periods of Sri Lagna's movement and where she resides. The dasa system is called Sri Lagna Kendradi Rasi. Jyotishi's know this as Sudasa. This dasa system informs the Jyotishi were Sri Lagna resides, within a given year, or it's Maha (great) dasa position , on a yearly basis. The Maha dasa can be the same for several years in a row, then changes to a new rasi position based upon the rules suggested above. I have computed this below for Native 1's Sri Lagna positions from birth.
    Native 1
    Ta 2008-2018 ( this begins March, 2008 and the total cycle repeats itself for the native with Taurus Maha dasa )
    What To Do With This Information?
    We look for the blessings in one's chart. There is a post on this and perhaps reviewing it would be beneficial.
    The question is , when does Sri Lakshmi bestow her blessings on the native? What Blessings? Dhana Lakshmi gives money, yet Dhanya gives food, Arogya Lakshmi gives health, Vidya Lakshmi gives knowledge, Gaja lakshmi gives vehicles, and Moksha Lakshmi assists in liberation. Are there others? sure, but lets keep it simple.
    • When Sri Lakshmi comes in contact with Gatikha Lagna (which we have calculated) she gives power and authority.
    • When She comes in contact with Hora Lagna She gives wealth or financial improvments ( recall wealth is not only $$$)
    • When She comes in contact with Guru ( Jupiter) She is Vidya Lakshmi, knowledge comes to the native.
    • When She comes in contact with Ketu, the Mokshakaraka, the assists with enlightenment
    • When She comes in contact with ones Ascendent, there is Her blessings of one's 1st house and the indicator's thereof
    • When She comes in contact with yogada's, Raja yogada's and Maha yogada's , She brings her influence again.
    • What to dasy when She comes in contact with the IShtadevata and the Atmakaraka in ones chart. Sri Lagna also applies to al the varga or 'amsa' charts. So we look to the D20 or the Vimsamsa for spiritual matters.
    With Her blessings there are things that have Argula on Her too... we spoke of argula, or intervention. So this plays a role. As does various influences that may retard (badaka sign) or compliment (exalted graha's) the blessings Sri Laksmi via Sri Lagna brings to one's life.
    Concluding remarks
    This gives a substantial overview on this matter. One last thing, the Narayana Dasa system compliments this Sudasa system in terms of timing. As Narayana dasa indicates how the world comes to you and efforts expended. Sri Lagna via Sudasa shows of what fruits are brought to the native with various prosperity and blessings from Her.
    To go deeper and wider with this is a substantial effort. There needs to be more foundational learning in other Jyotish techniques and methods for the sisya, which will lead us to a full blown Jyotish class... this , I am not prepared for, and perhaps few only few on this forum have the interest or desire to go to this level.
    So, as time permits and various subjects come up, I will offer what I know to assist in one's Jyotish comprehension.
    The question asked is no small matter ... Let me see if I can give you what you are requesting w/o over-doing it.
    For those interested in Jyotish, this may be of interest. For the the casual reader, Arvind has asked me 'what time is it?' and I cannot answer without informing him on how to build the watch!
    So, I will not build the watch completely as this requires a substantial in-depth conversation on Vedic Jyotish matters. I will though give a flavor of what this (Sri Lagna) is and how it works.
    [ as you know this knowledge is that of the tradition, and we thank them for their wisdom. We thank Sri Lakshmi for her blessings on this matter, as it is Her shakti we discuss - Om Sri Mahalakshmi Namaha ]
    First, Some Run Way
    We will use Native 1's information from the previous post. Using Gandhi's information will take more explaining, so we go with the simpler-is-better approach.
    For Native 1, the Sri Lagna position appears in Taurus, the the Nakshatra of Krittika [ please review the very first post on this subject above].
    Sri Lakshmi starts there and She moves throughout the various houses. This is new information for you. That is, there is a specific count that Sri Lagna moves as the native ages.
    She moves though Kendras first, then panapharas and then apoklimas. There are specific rules of movement, forward, backwords. And if Sri Lagna encounters specific graha's, the the rules change. So as you can see, bit of an overall endeavor to explain succinctly.
    Looking at Sri Lagna's Dasa system -
    There is a rasi dasa system that depicts the periods of Sri Lagna's movement and where she resides. The dasa system is called Sri Lagna Kendradi Rasi. Jyotishi's know this as Sudasa. This dasa system informs the Jyotishi were Sri Lagna resides, within a given year, or it's Maha (great) dasa position , on a yearly basis. The Maha dasa can be the same for several years in a row, then changes to a new rasi position based upon the rules suggested above. I have computed this below for Native 1's Sri Lagna positions from birth.
    Native 1
    Natal Chart
    Nakshatra: Rohini (Mo) (50.84% left)
    Sunrise: 4:35:28
    Sunset: 19:17:48
    Janma Ghatis: 26.9600
    Sidereal Time: 11:14:15
    Moon - 16 Ta 33' 15.18" Rohi 2 Ta Ta
    Hora Lagna 25 Ta 05' 44.79" Mrig 1 Ta Le
    Ghati Lagna 0 Li 22' 33.40" Chit 3 Li Li
    Sri Lagna 4 Ta 57' 41.90" Krit 3 Ta Aq
    Sudasa or the Maha dasa periods/locations of Sri Lagna
    Note that Ta = Taurus, Aq = Aquarius, etc.
    Ta 1952-1954
    Aq 1954-1959
    Sc 1959 -1967
    Le 1967-1968
    Ar 1968-1974
    Cp 1974-1978
    Li 1978-1987
    Cn 1987-1990
    Pi 1990-2001
    Sg 2001-2005
    Vi 2005-2007
    Ge 2007-2008 (present Maha Dasa or Sri Lagna's position today)
    Ta 2008-2018 ( this begins March, 2008 and the total cycle repeats itself for the native with Taurus Maha dasa )
    What To Do With This Information?
    We look for the blessings in one's chart. There is a post on this and perhaps reviewing it would be beneficial.
    The question is , when does Sri Lakshmi bestow her blessings on the native? What Blessings? Dhana Lakshmi gives money, yet Dhanya gives food, Arogya Lakshmi gives health, Vidya Lakshmi gives knowledge, Gaja lakshmi gives vehicles, and Moksha Lakshmi assists in liberation. Are there others? sure, but lets keep it simple.
    • When Sri Lakshmi comes in contact with Gatikha Lagna (which we have calculated) she gives power and authority.
    • When She comes in contact with Hora Lagna She gives wealth or financial improvments ( recall wealth is not only $$$)
    • When She comes in contact with Guru ( Jupiter) She is Vidya Lakshmi, knowledge comes to the native.
    • When She comes in contact with Ketu, the Mokshakaraka, the assists with enlightenment
    • When She comes in contact with ones Ascendent, there is Her blessings of one's 1st house and the indicator's thereof
    Can you suggest any one or two good astrology books stating details of :
    1) Arudha Lagna
    2) Hora Lagna
    3) Ghatik Lagna
    4) Yogada
    5) Paka Lagna .
    The books also needs to indicate as to how to interpret these Lagna's and Yogada.
    Namaste Arvind,
    I am at a loss for an answer for you.. why so? Many Jyotish Pandits will give you a glimpse of the techniques and hold back on the application there of. That is, information and application/interpretation is not so freely given out as they are protecting the information that has been handed down from teacher to student. They see this as high value (as I see their view on this) and is given shelter.
    The information you see above will not be so easily found in a book - that is , the information you see above is not one chapter out of a book. The knowledge comes from lectures, working with Jyotish gurus and the like. Even then, I am given a 'hint' on how it works , then the sisya goes and tries to work out the details. This is to see intent, groom cognition and intuition of the sisya.
    There is no one set of books that will comply to your request... I do recommend several books in past posts, please look there. I think there is a nice list in the Definitions folder under Jyotish. YOu will see HL, GL and Argula outlined in Parashara's Hora Sastra. I subscribe to Girish Chand Shama's works from Sagar Publications. ( two volume set)
    Yet that said, reading the classics will form the base line for your knowledge.
    I still consider myself a sisya after many years of study - just due to the extensive depth of this science... I think I will always be one and am fine with that.
    What I have found over the years of study, is to compliment my Jyotish studies with more shastras, upanishads, veda interpretations. I then can see the roots of Jyotish there, as Parasara was a most eminent rishi of the Rig ved. And Jaimini , if you have not reviewed his upadesa sutras, I would encourage it.
