    Namaste,

I often wondered where the X came from as an abbreviation for Xmas.

We know that Christmas is Christ's + Mass, from middle english's Christemasse or old English Cristes mæsse. These came from the Greek word christos and the Latin missa , and now get closer to the answer.

In in early Greek versions of the new testament the letter X or chi is the first letter of Greek, Khrstos, Christ. So X is an expedient way of representing Christ in Christ-mas.
At the same time, Xian and Xianity were in frequent use as abbreviations of "Christian" and "Christianity".

    pranams,

Actually I've seen the use of "x" used in the context of a kind of insulting and or demeaning shortcut.
