Yogas Formed At Birth...
Hari Om
~~~~~
Namaste,
Nitya (नित्य) yogas occur every day. Nitya means continual , perpetual , eternal as the angle-distance between the sun ( surya ) and moon ( Chandra) happen continually.
Some like to call this nitya 'daily' , as it continues day-in and day-out. And we know yoga is union. So it is the continual union of the sun + moon that forms a yoga day-in and day-out.
In Jyotish we measure 27 of these unions throughout the month. It is based upon the angle ° distance between the sun and the moon. If we take 360° and divide by 27 = 13°20' of an arc ( some write 13.33°. So for each 13.33° a yoga is formed.
When you are born, your birth took place in one of these yogas… It is the combination of the Sun+moon that is at the core of your birth ( Atman or jiva + Mind) and what is added to this Atman+mind? The Lagna or the body. So this yoga is one data point that gives just a clue on the quality of the individual coming into this creation and the work of the Universe.
Let me outline the 27 nitya yogas. If you have a birth chart this is usually called out in the jama-kundali information for you. Some jyotishas just call it the birth yoga, or yoga. Yet if you asked them what is the dina yoga or nitya yoga, they sould understand this.
These yogas are not to be confused with other yogas that are formed such as Ravi yogas, Chandra yogas, Dhanaya, yogas and the like.
The list is from the tradition as I am just an exponent of this knowledge and not the original author. I take no credit for this knowledge¹.
The method of calculating the nitya yoga is the following:
(Sun's Longitude + Moon's Longitude) divided by 13°20'
The resulting quotent tells you which of the 27 yogas are active. Some people like to convert the Longitudes all in to minutes then divide by 800 minutes ( also = to 13°20' )
Examples
Lets say you do a calculation and your answer is less then one… this indicates that the 1st yoga is active. Said another way the sun and moon are both within 13°20' of each other. Lets show this with the following example:
Sun is 5° and moon is 1° . (5° + 1°/ 13°20' = .45 and therefore Vishkumbha Yoga.
Another: Sun is 92° and moon is 46°33' = (92° + 46°33')/13°20' =10.39 or Vriddhi Yoga. Why did 10.39 yield Vriddhi Yoga, the 11th listed yoga? Because Ganda , the 10th yoga is completed, and then the 11th yoga period begins with any fraction calculated above 10 ( 10.1 or 10.2 , 10.3… ) i.e. after the 10th yoga.
