[quote=Hiwaunis;21273]Those who practice Brahmacarya can't be killed? If one is born that one is destined to die. However, dying and being killed are different.
Kindly please tell me if there is a deeper meaning.

Really!?! Bhishma had a wife and had sex with her? What happened to "all women of the world being his mother?" So why is he called the terrible?

    Om Shanti,

You guys are getting your wires crossed here, Bhisma Pitah, is not Ahbiymanu. Abhimanyu is son of Arjun whose wife Utra were newly wed.

By the way Bhisma Pita is not called the terrible, he is great devotee of Lord Shree Krishna.

'Bhishma' means 'He of the Bhishan oath', referring to his vow of life-long celibacy. Devavrata became known as Bhishma because he took the bhishan pratigya — the vow of life-long celibacy'Bhishma' means 'He of the Bhishan oath', referring to his vow of life-long celibacy. terrible does not do justice to Bhishan. even Gigantic oath will fall short.

    Namaste,
Excellent post... also note that Bishma's (beesh-mah) other names are Devavrata, Gangadatta and Dyu. He is one of the 8 Vasus, the celestials. How did he come to this earth and what was the circumstances? Here is the post on HDF if one has interest.

    Pranam Yajvan

Thank you, if I had to choose one character apart from Lord Krishna of course, it would be Bhisma Pita,
His role is so great that it makes me cry in joy.
