himālaya हिमालय- from himā हिमा or the cold season, winter, snow + ālaya आलय or abode, a house , dwelling; hence himālaya is the dwelling/abode of the cold season, the abode of snow.

Also one can think of himavat हिमवत् having frost or snow, snowy, frosty, icy, snow-clad ; a snowy mountain when thinking of
the him
ālaya-s.


Discussion- Some note this mountain as Mount Kailāśā, the dwelling of Śiva and Pārvatī. From a mountain climber's perspective it is the home of the World's highest mountain, Mt. Everest.
