    shiva sahasranama

    hello friends,

I like this clip of shiva sahasranama chanted in youtube:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iRdzHQqrC4
Can I find this work, Shiva sahasranama from internet? I just started studying sanskrit, so it's ok if it's in devanagari. I'd like to try to chant it myself.

    Thanks.

This is indeed a very beautiful rendition. It's from the Rudra Yamala Tantra:

    Thanks for your help!

I found some versions from internet but it is this one in youtube that claims to be from Rudrayamala tantra that always blows my mind.

I tried to listen to the audio link I copied here but it seems to me that it's not exactly the same as the Rudrayamala-versions I found as texts.

Fist of all, in the start of the texts there is an invocation of Ganesha which I don't find in the audio. In the audio I hear something like this in the beginning: "atha rudrayamalayoga sri shiva sahasranama stotram..."

The following part I found here as I googled the words I heard:
    http://placelife.com/veda/agnihotra/mantra/index.html

"Om Namaste astu bhagavan visvesvaraya Mahadevaya tryambakaya
    Tripurantakaya trikalagnikalaya Kalagni rudraya nilakanthaya
    Mrtyunjayaya Sarvesvaraya Sadasivaya Srimanmahadevaya namah"

From there on, the audio and the text doesn't seem to match.

    Any toughts?

    Re: shiva sahasranama

The text of sahasranamas as they are used in worship are more elaborate than as they appear in the original scripture. There are often shlokas added for worship, like nyasa shlokas to create an armor of mantras, dhyana shlokas for meditation and more additional shlokas and mantras. These shlokas can often be traced back to certain smritis or tantras.

m Namaste astu bhagavan visvesvaraya Mahadevaya tryambakaya
    Tripurantakaya trikalagnikalaya Kalagni rudraya nilakanthaya
    Mrtyunjayaya Sarvesvaraya Sadasivaya Srimanmahadevaya namah"

This is a very beautiful Shiva mantra from the krishna yajurveda which has also been added to the recitation of the shri rudram, allthough it appears in a different chapter of the veda.

The youtube link only has the first ten minutes of the parayana, most sahasranamas, including all aditional shlokas, can last 30-60 minutes. Here's a full version: http://astrojyoti.com/shivasahasranamastotraMP3.htm

Maybe you have found a text of a sahasranamavali, which lists all the 1000 seperately, instead of a sahasranama text which lists the names compact in verse vorm.

It is not sahasranama but sahastranama सहस्त्रनाम .

That's how my grandmother says it too, but that's probably some Hindi dialect. In Sanskrit it's sahasranama, otherwise I would have to change my username.
