Re: Tanjore 1000 year celebration
namaste.
The Hindu upaveda 'NATya shAstra' describes how Shiva taught the 108 karaNas--movements, of the BharatanATyam dance to Bharata muni, author of the shAstra. Dr. PadmA SubrahmaNyan, the world-renowned BharatanATyam dancer, researcher and exponent, did her PhD thesis on these 108 karaNas, researching the dance sculptures in the Shiva temples at Chidambaram, KumbakoNam and ThanjAvUr.
Her profile in the Website http://www.narthaki.com/info/profiles/profil10.html says:
"She has designed the sculptures of the 108 Karanas of Lord Siva and Godess Parvati in black granite for the Nataraja temple at Satara in Maharashtra, an undertaking she took on at Kanchi Paramacharya's bidding. She was asked to freeze those movements of the Karanas, which are not sculpted in the older temples of Tanjore or Chidambaram. She has made use of the twin figures of Siva and Parvati to bring out the animation of each of the Karana movements. "
In the BRhadIshvara temple at ThanjAvUr, King RAjarAja Chozha has installed only 81 scupltures of the dance karaNas, leaving out the remaining 27 for reasons unknown. Dr.PadmA has offered to complete the series for the occasiion of the temple's 1000th anniversary celebrations. However, since the temple is a protected site under the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, it may not be possible to install new scupltures, so Dr.PadmA has suggested that the authorities could consider setting up portraits to show these missing karaNas.

To her whose feet are washed by the ocean, who wears the Himalayas as her crown, and is adorned with the gems of rishis and kings, to Mother India, do I bow down in respect.
