Thread: Is your personality a representation of who to follow?

Is your personality a representation of who to follow?

For instance, if I am more so into yoga and meditation, should I be following Siva?

If I am more into arts and poetry should I follow the goddess?

More so into worship should I be following Vishnu?

I know that they are all aspects of the divine, though should my hobbies and personality be my guide as to who I worship?

    How do I choose?

No need to choose, You have already Choosen something in your Heart.

Chooses are not based on your sayings & declareation, It is all based on what your heart is demanding day & night,

This is the LAW of nature, No one can live without demads, The waves of demands keep on flowing from the body continuesly,

Yes! there can be change in demands, but demands never stop.

For example: If somebodie's heart is demanding MONEY day & night, Than weather he/she may worship Lord Vishnu or Lord Shiva,
But! in the true sence he/she is the devotee of Godess LUXAMI Ji,

    Luxami means Money,

So & So are the other demands which are related to other Deities.

W Tyler ji, I hope that you are understanding my point Smartly

Good post. Normally, you choose based on what you feel at the moment. When writing poetry, some people may think of Goddess Saraswati. I think of Hanuman every time I work out for strength; and of Gandhi and Jesus whenever I try to inculcate compassion, love, or similar feelings.

But let's hear from more experienced people.

    Vannakkam WTyler:

I'm not sure whether personality helps one determine sect or not. I've seen all kinds of personalities in all sects. But I would say that to some degree, sect could determine or help mold personality. Sects that focus on communal bhakti would help in bringing everyone along in a more social way. Sects that have a high focus on scriptural study and debate may 'create' a more intellectual style person.

But certainly your personality has an effect on style and approach. For example, in temple worship, there are basically two types (generalising, I know): those that go when there are crowds, and perhaps a bit of socialising, and those that go when nobody is there, and find a quiet place to sit and take in the energy. So the former have more outgoing personalities, and the latter are more withdrawn or shy.

But it is a very interesting question. Thanks for posing it.

There is another view on this matter... you are speaking of your iṣṭa-devatā, the ambassador of the formless that has form.
From a jyotish point of view this can be ascertained in one's chart. Consider the following HDF posts :

Allow me to offer a slightly different POV on this matter...
    • lakṣmī in the feminine gender (and sometimes we find it as lakṣmīka) is a mark , sign. What sign comes with this definition?A good sign , good fortune , prosperity , success , happiness.
    • As a noun, it is the name of the devatā of fortune and beauty; We find her identified with śrī and regarded as the wife of viṣṇu or nārāyaṇa.
    • Her name is also associted with various plants a white tulasī = ṛddhi , vṛddhi , priyaṅgu , and phalinī.
    • In jyotish this is lakṣmī is the eleventh kalā of the moon.
She is always associated with puṇyā (the good or right , virtue , purity , good work , meritorious act , moral or religious merit )
