Why o why???

Why? The Upanishads, the oldest of all scriptures had no name for god, not even aum. Why is it in the puranas have divides us? Shaivites, Vaishnavs, Swaminarayan's, Brahmakumaris, Sai-Babaist etc. We should not be really worshipping them like this. This is the philosphy of Swami Sachidanand of Dantali.

I was told yesterday by an elder at my Mandir that before the sects existed, everyone fell under the umbrella of Sanatan. My own personal explanation would be that in Hinduism one chooses a personal God instead of believing in just a "God out there somewhere" - and the choice accounts for the variety of sects. This is just a limited view however with my limited experience.
