I see this slightly differently. I have read many of his works. There is no doubt they are somewhat lacking. Why so?
Scriptures without a guide or without personally pursuing the Supreme makes the words of the śāstra-s as just ink on paper. What is missing? The insight, saṁketa, the symbols with their in-depth meanings.
Yet above all, it is the knowledge that the śāstra-s can be viewed on 3 levels:
- ādhyatmika: The spiritual or psychological level
- ādhiyajñika: The ritualistic level: pertains to the performance or works, particularly rituals we call yajña
- ādhidaivika: The cosmological level: pertains to the laws of nature.
This IMHO is what Mr. Griffith missed or did not grasp. For this I hold back any judgement.
