    Pranam

popularly know with Gujrati's, is Mardan, i have no reference to provide, just guessing, why, if can imagine stuck in a confined space for nine months, those joints must be a bit stiff, messaging helps circulation off blood as well as keep the joints supple.

this is what i found online

declaimer this not a recommendation, just for information.

    Jai Shree Krishna
Rig Veda list only 33 devas, they are all propitiated, worthy off our worship, all other names of gods are derivative from this 33 originals,
Bhagvat Gita; Shree Krishna says Chapter 3.11 devan bhavayatanena te deva bhavayantu vah parasparam bhavayantah sreyah param avapsyatha Chapter 17.4 yajante sattvika devan yaksa-raksamsi rajasah pretan bhuta-ganams canye yajante tamasa janah

    Namasté,

Issacnewton, I found two good articles online about infant massage:

This one is a nice introduction and gives a few reasons why this massage is done:
    http://www.sanatansociety.org/ayurvedic_massage/ayurvedic_baby_massage.htm

And this one is from Hinduism Today and is a complete step-by-step guide, with explanations of how, why, and when:

    Congratulations to your friend.

    namaste.

The video clip GP has suggested is good, but be aware that this thread finds Johnson's baby care products to have toxic content:

There might be some useful information about babe care in the 'Pregnancy, Labor & Delivery ' subforum of the IL Website (I haven't checked, though):

    Namaste

Another practice from old times - wonder of it is still followed - was dhoop.

The fumes of the dhUp - incense stick (dhUp kAndi) or in old times, actual coal-like fire, were used to warm up the baby held near it. This apparently purifies the body-mind and prAN of the baby while keeping it warm.

Safety issues may be the downside of this.

The baby massage with right oils (all-natural) is for the right development of muscular, skeletal, digestive, circulatory AND nervous system of the baby.

Gross and fine motor is only the obvious result, but it is for the whole - mind-body, brain and nervous system.

Since a newborn is extremely delicate, it has to be done carefully only with the right knowledge of the technique.
