A rare form of Shiva in reclining posture is worshipped at SuruttappaLLi, Chittore district, 60 kilometers from Chennai. Called PaLLikondeeswarar, this is the form of Shiva after he felt dizzy on consuming the poison from the milky ocean and reclined on Parvati's lap. AmbaaL in this temple has the name Maduravalli.
The temple is believed to have been built during the reign of Bukraya of the Vijayanagar period. It received financial aid from Kanchi SriMaTham 50-60 years back for renovation works. It was a favourite temple of Kanchi Paramacharya.
On a personal note, me and my friends are trying to visit this temple for quite sometime, but couldn't get around to it for one reason or another. We are now waiting for Shiva's grace to make the trip possible for us.
