    Incense use

I like offering incense along with the lamp lighting. The only problem, and this problem is going to sound silly, is the ashes from the sticks. No matter how I place the sticks, even upright and with the holder on a dish using short or long sticks, the ashes fall every-which-way. I don't like them falling onto the altar table or onto the murthis or framed images. What do you do?

Vannakkam Minotaur: I've used 3 different solutions over time.

    1) Just get used to it, and clean it up.
    2) Put any holder on top of a larger metal tray (the kind you can get in Indian stores) and then its really easy to wash the tray.
    3) Get a larger wider mouth tin can or jar, and fill it with sand or soil almost to the top. Then put the sticks in the middle. There should be little or no 'spillage'.

You think that incense is hard. Try working with sambrani some time.

    Best wishes.

    Namaste EMji, and thanks.

I think option #1 really gets to the heart of it.

I'm looking for a brass tray for that very purpose. I'd like it to hold a diya and the incense holder. I think that would be a nice combo. I've seen nice items on Indian Gifts Portal.

I use a big Abalone shell, did not know at time how shells were very commonly used.

It catches everything and quickly cleans up.

    Abalone shells are indeed pretty.

I did some shopping on Indian Gifts Portal, but the shipping came to the same amount as my purchase. I decided to forgo it. I'll keep looking locally.

    Hari Om!

Have you considered an incense "coffin"? It's a box that the incense is contained within. Holes in the box allow the smoke out but keep the ash and residue in. I've used one but went back to the old way of doing things for whatever the reason over the years. Do a search on Amazon.com for "incense coffin" and you'll get the idea.

I use an "incense coffin" but also an ordinary wooden incense older as well, they both work great.

Also, you can buy incense cones, and just use a small dish or cub and light them in there!

We have used one in the past, but eventually it burned down.

    Re: Incense use

I have heard of people using ash from the incense on their murtis and on themselves. Similar to holy ash, anyone hear of this?
