    Sri. Krishna Janmashtami Celebrations

Janmashtami is a two-day celebration in many parts of world. The first two days are celebrated colorfully and the merrymaking reaches its peak at midnight of the first day, when Lord Krishna was born. To mark the birth of the deity, the idol of the infant Krishna is bathed and is cradled in the midnight time. Conch shell is blown and the devotees celebrate the birth of the Lord Krishna by singing devotional songs and by dancing with great joy. Thereafter, mouthwatering sweets and dishes are served to the devotees.

In the ignorant days of past
From the quicksand of material world
You come here to pull us out
In those wee hours of Brahma-muhUrta dawn
As sleep still covered the mind
Made a herbal paste of many herbs
With lots of love, mortar and peslte
    And sweet halwA-shira of ghee
In a large bowl did nestle
Applied the paste to Your Lotus Feet
Poured crystal pure Ganga-jal over Them
Only to find a surprise nectar so sweet
They were glowing - flourescent blue !
Yes, Your Lotus Feet that give salvation
    From Which the Ganga flows
Those Very Feet that are the source and sink
    Of this adhyAtma-path and realization
Nectar for the eyes, they could not move
Away from the beautifully flourescent Feet
That illuminated the pitch-darkness of dawn

Tears of joy rolling down in the silence of the morn
    Offered Naivedya sweet
Woke up smiling to brush it away
    And forgot all about it
Instinct made her cook a sumptuous meal
And offer it as naivedya - this she did not know why
No explanation for this behavior whatsoever
Silly, shook her head, the day passed by
At night when all the world slept
    She accidentally saw on TV
The news was playing on screen
Today was Shri KrushNa JanmAshtami !!
    Oh my g o o d n e s s !
It was none other that Shri KrushNa JanmAshtami ~

    (That was Janmashtami 2006)

    Sri. Krishna at Durbar

Tanjore painting, Classical South Indian painting native to the town of Thanjavur (Tanjore) in Tamil Nadu. Dates back to about 1600 AD, Tanjore paintings are known for their surface richness, vivid colours and compact composition. Essentially serving as devotional icons, the themes of most of these paintings are Hindu gods and goddesses.

Dear Smaranam: You have always upheld your love and devotion to surrender at the feet of Lord Janardhana through your beautiful poetic renderings. It should be a glorifying moment to all, if you could repost your earlier works in this thread and make us fortunate to listen to that again. Love

    Namaste Brahman

Thank You so much for this thread, the Janmashtami special picture frame (a gift) and those rarely seen South Indian and Tanjore paintings. Thanks for all the ornaments on this thread.

My poetry - can be really bad, from the perspective of being a poem. It is just ideas, thoughts put together. You have always been encouraging, thank you.

Here is one of my early "bad poems" but KrushNa hides all flaws just by being Himself. (I shall post links to some others).

KRshna KRshna What do you see ?
I see sheer Transcendence looking back at me ....

    His kindness and generosity.
    His diligence towards each devotee.

The way He juggles the truth to keep promises.
He is the sweetest and humblest of beings despite being the Supreme Lord.
    He is goodness personified.

His transcendental complexion , hue - no amount of color mixing in this world can generate that hue.
His Lotus Feet, anklets, flower-anklets and bracelets.
    His long flowing hair,

    the Banke-Bihari pose,

    His various smiles.

The way He teases Queen Rukmini and His respect for Her.
The amused look on His face at Satyabhama's temper.
The innocent fluttering of eyes while explaining the butter on His face to Mother Yashoda.
His ecstatic love for Radharani (which made Him appear as Lord Chaitanya).

He is the reservoir of pleasure ,
    the safest haven,
    the ultimate shelter,
    the Dearest to souls ...
... and a lot lot more...

Jai Shree Krshna Govind Mukund Murari !!

More bad poetry but KrushNa pervades it so hides the flaws. Thanks again, Brahman for the festival spirit as always.

I stole Him from Braj !
    Shri KRshNa Govinda hare MurAre
    he nAth NArAyaNa VAsudeva ~
Hare KRshNa Hare KRshNa KRshNa KRshNa Hare Hare
Hare RAm Hare RAm RAm RAm Hare Hare ~

"KshamA karnA TauJi, mai aapke Kanhaiyaa ko churakar le ja rahi hun"
"Forgive me TauJi (BalrAmJi), but i am stealing Your KanhaiyA from Brajbhumi"

"Forgive me Yashoda MaiyA, i am stealing Your Lalla from Braj"

i paid my last final obeissances before leaving the Temple...

On the road out of VRndAvan BAL KRshNa was quiet and comfortable in the van - ... i gave Him some of His favorite munchies... then He looked drowsy and tired so i put Him to sleep.... but something was wrong..... i felt guilty for stealing Him away, although He was always there before this VRndavan trip....
how could i be so unfair to my dear KAnhA, and separate Him from His dearest vrajvAsis, and He is only a baby!

Despite such injustice that i was meting out, He did not complain. His silence made my heart cry....
    then the solution came by.....

The entire Braj poured, cascading down into my heart in the form of the waters of Yamuna ... the pure sound and scent of the Yamuna in the background. Then it was quiet again....

So i have to change the title of the story to: "I stole Braj from Braj."
