    prounounciation of Mrtyunjaya Mantra

    Vanakkam,

I have post Mrtyunjaya Mantra to some page
Then one corrected the post, he said :

Must be THARAmbhakam yajamahe and NOT TRYAmbhakam.

    Acctually which is true ?

But why there is have some people chant as TRYambhakam (3 eyes) , then now i found person who chant it THARAmbhakam ...

    Thank you

Short answer: may be dialect. I may be wrong too, but I pronounce it "Tr(a)-yambakam". I can't read devanagari, but "try-" would be transliterated and pronounced "trai-ambakam".

    ॐ त्र्यम्बकम् यजामहे सुगन्धिम् पुष्टिवर्धनम् | ऊर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ||

    aum tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭi-vardhanam
urvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya māmṛtāt

I know that Yajvanji and smaranamji will definitely be able to correct us both. I'd like to know the corect pronunciation, because even as Vaishnava, I love the mantra. I believe it appeals to Lord Krishna through Lord Shiva. I said it as a prayer at my mother-in-law's funeral, even though she was RC.

[Edit] I just found another transliteration of it:

    Aum Trayambakam Yajaamahey
    Sugandhim Pushti Vardhanam
    Urvaarukamiva Bandhanaath
    Mrutyor Muksheeya Maamritaat

According to this, it might look like "Try-ambakam" because someone might break it into tray (trai)-ambakam. But I still believe it should be "Tra-yambakam".

For those that may wish to review this a bit further, let me offer this...all corrections are welcomed.

How many t's can you have ?
It is based upon the tongue position in the mouth ; there are 5 positions possible, here are 2.

dental called dantya - Note we add the 'a' so pronunciation is possible . On a more profound level it is śiva and śakti - śiva owns the 'a' and all vowels while śakti owns all the consonants . Hence śakti cannot be without śiva.

    • ta त ( unasperated)
    • tha थ (asperated)
cerebral called mūrdhanya ( some call retroflex)
    • ṭa ट (unasperated)
    • ṭha ठ (asperated)
For our use we can set the following in place to limit confusion for this post:
    • ta = ṭa and sounds like tub or tap
    • tha = ṭha and sounds like anthill , or easier to see and pronounce an-thill
Let's look at this word त्र्यम्बक or tryambaka ; when we look at its components, one way of viewing it is like this ( I chose 3 for obvious reasons) त्र्य म्ब क
    त्र्य = traya or tri त्र + ya
    म्ब = mba
    = ka

You can see the import of 'ya' as it smoothly ties त्र्य म्ब and forms tryamba. Some may think this way त्रि ( tri) + अम्ब (amba) + क (ka) , yet 'ya' is lost and greatly needed. We talked on other posts that 'ya' is joining. Other conversations led us to 'aya' which is a move towards.

So, it is my opinion that tryambaka is without a 'tha' or 'ṭha' sound-syllable ( phoneme).
