    Durge Durgat Bhari Aarti

    Namaste,

For my 108th post, I wish to honor Maa, and also show the joy I have come to know through my admittedly clumsy efforts to draw closer to Her.

This clip (despite being from a remake of an American film)
does an excellent job of conveying this sense of joy, wonder and compassion-
and understanding Marathi is not required

What is your assessment of this 108? From where does it come ?

    Namaste yajvan,

It is an unexpected pleasure to see your question

My humble apologies in advance for any error or misunderstanding
    contained in my answer.

The number 108 is quite significant and remarkable to my view for several
    reasons, some of which are:

    108 beads on a mala

    108 names of Durga

    108 Upanishads

    108 is a Harshad number ("Harshad" Sanskrit for "joy-giver");
a Harshad number is an integer that is divisible by the sum of its digits-
    108's digit sum = 9; 108/9 = 12.

Also, (with the exception of 9 itself and 7 as divisors) the following quotients

    108/8 = 13.5
    108/6 = 18
    108/5 = 21.6
    108/4 = 27
    108/3 = 36
    108/2 = 54

all have digit sums of 9.
(The number 9 is of course highly significant- but that would be another entire page at least!)

    (1^1)*(2^2)*(3^3) = 108

The distance of the Sun from Earth, divided by the Sun's diameter and distance of the Moon from Earth, divided by the Moon's diameter- are both approximately equal to 108.

The atomic weight of silver (rounded to the nearest whole number) is 108.

Sri Yantra contains 54 marmas, each having shiva/shakti aspects, totaling 108.

One takes an average of 10,800 breaths in 12 hours.

on a more prosaic note, 108 is also EMRI number.

Many thanks again, yajvan- I am sure you can add much clarity to this,
    please share your thoughts!

    One more view of 108...

From a jyotish perpsective all of this world is seen within the 12 houses. Yet too we look to the path of the moon and where it resides as it travels and for this there are 27 nakśatra; the moon owns these asterisms ( as they are sometimes called) and that all graha-s transit through.

Each nakśatra contains 4 pāda. There are 27 nakśatra X 4 pāda = 108 pāda. Hence the 108 suggests all of creation and action that it contains as an expression of the path of all the graha and their influence.

    praām

    words

    • pada पाद- is known as a foot as a measure, a step, yet also as 1/4th.
    • nakśatra नक्षत्र- a lunar mansion ~ constellation ~ for lack of a better word; there are 27 or 28 identified pending how they are used
