How many lamps? Odd number, even number?

    Namaste.

This is probably a trivial question, but I like having my shrine area lit as much as possible. I love light and I think the devas do too. I have 3 lights; tea lights in brass holders (I can't get the wicks to stay lit for anything when using ghee or oil). If I were to put additional lights in the shrine, do I make it an odd number? For some reason I seem to think you use an odd number of lights.

    Hello,

It is an interesting question, I never asked it myself Oo I don't know if it's vital through... Personnaly I lit a lamp for every God picture in my altar, and dedicate a lamp to each. It's maybe not enough, but it's easy for me to meditate as each lamp, each light and each fire make me thing of each God in the altar, yet all fire are warm and cast light, it make me remember that all Gods are a part of Brahman.
Yet it is very personnal and I'm sorry, I don't really know if there are strict rules about this...

    Aum !

Heh, if I had a lamp for every diety on my altar, I would indeed have a blaze of glory. But that is a nice idea and way of doing it.

I have seen photos in temples of ENORMOUS lamps with a host of flames. I think they are beyond being called diyas... some are 6' tall. Though most I've seen being passed by pujaris are 5 wick lights.

    I do everything to excess.
