    Studying Scriptures

    Namaste,

Like most involved Hindus, I too have done a fair share of studying/reading/browsing of our scriptures, albeit in their translated form. However the law of diminishing returns had been kicking in and my time with the books had been going down. 'devotee' happened to mention 'Uttara Gita' in one of his posts. I searched for it and found it posted on a site (http://ebookbrowse.com/uttara-gita-pdf-d185553106) in the pdf format. Much to my delight, I found the following verse in chapter 1:

    19. As a man throws away the husks after threshing out the corn, so does also an intelligent person give up the study of books after he has gained knowledge from them.

Not to elevate myself to the level of an 'intelligent person', that this verse speaks of, or to insinuate that I am saturated with all that there is to know; but I think that after decades of reading and writing, the real challenge is the application of acquired knowledge in my daily life, rather than collecting and hoarding any more. This verse gives me the reason to meditate on what I know rather than reading/studying more - perfect alibi for a way out.

    Pranam.

Lately anything I post, people think I did it with him(them) in mind, or that it was all directed at him(them).
Can't a man express his thoughts any more without people looking for an ulterior motive in the post?

Vannakkam: Hey it wasn't me that bumped your points level beyond a certain number. But point taken ... shall attempt to be less egocentric in future. Thanks for the support. Good to know we're in agreement.

    Namast,

"Let no such superstition be nurtured in the mind of children that learning is reading books. It is to be a known at every step that the treasures of books are accumulated from the storehouse of Nature, and this should be, and we also have the authority to have it in the same way....
To read without thinking is like accumulating building materials without building anything."

    Namaste.

And I'm just beginning my book-hoarding career. I have about 7 copies of the Bhagavad Gita; 3 or 4 of the Upanishads; all with and without commentaries; 3 of the Ramayana; but sadly only 1 Mahabharata. No, wait... 2 if you count the Youtube playlist episodes of the Indian TV production. The challenge now is to read and study them... in 1 lifetime.

In my opinion it is quite disrespectful to throw with books, especially directed towards a person.
