There are a couple of points in your very good quotes. At first, there is creation as a conscious act, but at the end, there is self-direction towards God consciousness as the act!

I have read, now I cannot find it, of the effect of creation as the "self-effulgence" of God. I have also enjoyed the teachings of this great soul...

    Self-Enquiry (Ramana Maharshi)

In which I find a similar idea as God dwelling in God (as an act).

    Re: How did karma start?

An eternally unsolved question! I would have loved to see more discussions on this because I don't fully understand it. It makes sense as to how soul/God/Universe were all for ever. It also makes sense as to how God is unaffected, just like the soul being in the body is unaffected by its impurities.

But what baffles my small mind is this. Lets say I was an animal before this birth (it most probably seems that way ). Then I was an insect before, a plant before that....goes on and on....what's the beginning? How many births would I have had? As someone pointed out, every Vedantic school dismisses any idea of a first karma in this. Even Buddha I believe, mentioned that the mind can never find an origin. Or is the problem because of the fact that time itself is a part of creation and dissolution?

I guess this one is simply beyond (but not contrary to) the mind.

I think the relation between God and karma is the same as the relation between the infinite and the finite. God, the infinite, transcends and underlies karma, the finite. Think of a graph of a logarithmic spiral and compare God to the origin, theta=infinity, and karma to the spiral -- the origin transcends and underlies the spiral!
