    natural daśā system

    hariḥ o

In another HDF post I wrote,
There is a natural daśā sytem that applies to manuṣya or human life, that we all participate in. It is called the naisargika ( or natural) daśā system. It is a different way of dividing up the viṁśottarī daśā (120) period
If one read the post http://www.hindudharmaforums.com/sho...13&postcount=3 they would have observed that 7 graha-s were mentioned for this daśā sytem. Within this system rāhu and ketu do not have a daśā period.... why so ?

    Namaste yajvan,

Thank you kindly for your wonderfully informative posting; this helps and inspires my current studies.

I can't help but wonder if Rahu and Ketu's absence in this dasa, might be due to the non luminous nature of the shadow planets, with their being some
what less material, and less prone to act upon our biological development as we grow. Being more connected to and involved with our minds, as is
suggested by their dependence upon Chandra's dance.

You are drilling in the right field...

Various daśā systems have different approaches . The naisargika ( or natural) daśā system is composed of 7 sthira kāraka-s
    • sthira = steadfastness, unfluctuating , durable , lasting , permanent and considered 'fixed'
    • kāraka¹ = instrimental in bringing about actions
These sthira kāraka-s are used for longivity calculations. We find them in āyus (duration of life) daśā systems and other daśā systems that deal with physical entities or subject matter. Rāhu and ketu therefore do not participate in this matter, as they are calculated locations without physical attributes.

Yet to compare and contrast this notion, we also have the cara kāraka-s and various daśā systems that include these graha-s.
    • cara ( the 'c' is pronounced as 'ch') - movable
    • kāraka-s - instrimental in bringing about actions
Within this type of system jaimini-muni and parāśara-ji are clear there are 8 graha-s within this system of reckoning and it includes rāhu but not ketu.

Yet we once again come to a question , why not ketu ? Ketu is the mokṣa kāraka, concerned with liberation, not with mundane life; it has no head.

So, as one works with various daśā systems (parāśara-ji calls out 32) sometimes 9, 8, or 7 graha-s may be used/applied. It is the accomplished jyotiṣa who knows the proper application and how to exersise this knowledge for the benefit of the native asking one's chart to be reviewed.

    1. do not confuse kāraka with kārikā; kārikā is a consise statement, like a sūtra; an example would be the bhairava kārikā-s often mentioned here on HDF.
