    Why 14 years ? Why not 10 or 15 ?
As sivafan has alluded to kala¹ puruṣa may be of interest in understanding this 14 year period. If it is of this notion, then via jyotiṣh we can look to various divisions of time (kala). These divisions are called daśā periods. Many who read of this 14 year exile associate it with the viṁśottarī daśā (120) period of śanaiscara or saturn.

During this time multiple things can occur such as exile or imprisonment, grief, a fall from heights ( this includes physical, career and status). It also is a time for renunication. So, when people understand this they say ' oh yes, this must be the time that rāmaḥ experienced, it parallels the period of exile.'
Yet there is one problem, the śani daśā period lasts 19 years and we do not have an exact match. Then people say, it must be the period called śadsāti (meaning 7 1/2 years) of śani (saturn). Once again we come up short; even if we double the amount of time ( 7.5 x 2 = 15 years)
we over-shoot the 14 year exile.

So what is one to do? We know the qualities that a śanaiscara (or saturn) daśā period may bring and this aligns to rāmaḥ's exile, yet the numbers do not align properly. We look to rāmaḥ's chart and see if there are some ~ special conditions~ that may apply to use other daśā systems, other then the direct application of the viṁśottarī daśā system... and there is.
I will not go into detail regarding these conditions, yet we are coached by the accomplished jyotiṣa-s¹ that another daśā scheme applies.

This other scheme is called the lagna kendradi graha daśā system. For those that have interest, it's ~parent~ is the viṁśottarī daśā system, with special applications considered for the daśā periods.

It is via this lagna kendradi graha daśā that the period of saturn = 14 years aligns to the time that śṛi rām remained in the
forest. Not to mention when he returned and was brought to his proper status within the kingdom, this aligns perfectly to the period of the sun ( rāja, royalty).

    words
    • kala is time or a division of time; note too that kalā is the personified as a daughter of kardama and wife of marīci;
      • kālā is black or very dark blue. Some know this too as the poisonous serpent nāga called kālasarpa we find in joytiṣh
      • kālā is another name of of durgā yet most use the term kālī.
    • accomplished jyotiṣa - in this case paṇḍita sanjay rath.

    Dear Shri Yajvan,

If I remember correctly, Sri Rama has 4 planets exalted in his chart and one of them is Saturn. So did Kaikeyi think Rama would become great success if he became a king in exalted Saturn dasha and that is why she banished him for 14 yrs? Sounds like so.

It is quite interesting you mention this... śṛi rām's chart, at first glance has a graha in each kendra (1,4, 7 and 10th houses). Yet too his chart has 5 graha-s exalted ( we call ucca)- that is sun, jupiter, mars, venus and saturn.

Now why do I mention this graha in each kendra? We are told when this occurs then the tara daśā system applies. We are told, those natives with this application are born to fulfill a strong desire. The strength of the 5 graha-s being in their ucca positions ( 4 of them reside in the 4 kendra-s) suggest this tara daśā to be quite strong and relevent. If one understands the qualities of śṛi rām we will find this dictum to be true.

Yet that which will represent a great king ( rāja, royalty) is the sun, and it is exalted in Aries.

data eka rāmā bhikāri sari duniyā- the giver is the one rāma, the world is a beggar.

Rama's virtues are enduring. That means they live today, and in the future. The quality of all His virtues is that His actions speak louder than His words. I say "speak", because they still do today. All over the world you will find Him. The Ramayana is His history, and holds many answers and also subtle enlightenment or even complete enlightenment. Yet it was specifically Rama Himself who lived, and lives in the Heart of Hanuman. That is what we see when we see the artistic work of devotees depicting Lord Hanuman. Hanuman showing us Rama in his heart. So that is why we see Rama all over the world. It is because all of His virtues bring us Someone who can live in our heart. And so that is why Rama is so popular, so vast around this material world we find Ramayana, in so many languages even. His virtues speak louder than word, and He is endeared to multitudes all over the world. In one way, He is still travelling much farther than to Lanka, but to every place and even to towns in America, or an island in the Pacific. In one way, that ability is almost a virtue in itself. I guess a word for it in English might be glory.

For example, in the Valmiiki-Raamaayana, Raama is most certainly not a Shiva-bhakta. Vaalmiiki wrote that He performed worship of Naaraayana just prior to His coronation:
Why can anyone substantiate that Ram is Vishnu Avatar from Valmiki Ramayan?

Can we conclude from your assertion, that Tulsidas Goswami got it completely wrong, and you are more right then him?

It is not unheard of in Raghukla to worship Lord Shiva I suppose.
